Everyday Dances III is a concert of ten new, short choreographic works by visionary choreographers based in San Diego, performed by the renowned Malashock Dance Company. Malashock Dance produces the annual “Everyday Dances” concert to support its mission to illuminate dance as an invaluable part of the human experience, creating a hub where artists come together to create new work and connect with audiences. Our vision is to engage the community in discovering the wide variety of San Diego-based dance artists who are poised to share their powerful creative voices; demonstrate leadership; and fulfill their artistic vision in collaboration with a community of dance makers and professional dancers.

On Sunday afternoon, May 21, PHES Gallery will open its newest exhibition, “Story Quilts” in Carlsbad, CA. "Story Quilts" features the work of eleven local textile and fiber artists; Sandra Lauterbach, Nancy Lemke, Viviana Lombrozo, Nelda McComb, Dan Olfe, Marty Ornish, Karen Rips, Tara Ritacco, Dinah Sargeant, Deborah Weir, and Susan Willen. Calling all Poets! A poetry writing competition will be held at PHES Gallery in conjunction with “Story Quilts.” Please join us for a creative dive into ekphrastic poetry - poetry written in response to art. The public will have the opportunity to write a poem (or poems) in response to the show at the Gallery. Submissions will be accepted through June 11. Each entry must include the quilt number, your name, and the title of your poem. Poems will be performed in the Gallery courtyard on June 25 at 5 p.m., followed by a poet's reception. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 poems. Malashock Dance & Outside the Lens, in partnership with Doug McMinimy, present a free exhibit and reception featuring dance photography created by students in grades 8-12. Students participated in a workshop with renowned dance photographer Doug McMinimy to explore technology and techniques for capturing dance on camera. The students worked with educators from Outside the Lens and Malashock Dance Company dancers. Enjoy a beautiful exhibit and complimentary beverages and snacks. A powerfully gifted musician and a scholar of Black American music, Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and the New Yorker, earned a perfect 5-star review from the Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Blount’s new album, The New Faith, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (released September 23, 2022). The New Faith is spiritual music, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. On stage, each song he and his band play is chosen for a reason—because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment.
