After the postponement of our previous summer date, Oceanside Intl Film Festival proudly presents the Stephen King's "Thinner" Special Reunion Screening. Save the date for Saturday, January 20, 2024. Brought to you by Visit Oceanside, join us for this exclusive screening at the Star Theatre in Downtown Oceanside. Attending the event are legendary horror director Tom Holland, stars Robert John Burke, Joe Mantegna and monster makeup Artist Vincent J. Guastini. Our screening will include a retrospective Q&A discussion on their careers in filmmaking and a limited meet and greet. In Stephen King's "Thinner", an obese lawyer (Billy Halek, played by Robert John Burke) finds himself growing “Thinner” when a mysterious carny (Michael Constantine) places a hex on him. Now the lawyer must call upon his friends in organized crime (Joe Mantegna) to help persuade the old man to lift the curse. Time is running out for the desperate lawyer as he draws closer to his own death & grows ever thinner by the day.

Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “How British Silversmiths Changed America’s Dinner Tables” by Carolyn Tillie, at 10:30 a.m. May 20, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. Did you inherit a family silver chest containing pieces you can’t identify? In this engaging presentation, culinary historian and food artist Carolyn Tillie will introduce you to the history and advances of the British metalworking trades and techniques which shaped silversmiths worldwide. Walking us through the invention of Old Sheffield Plate in 1743 through the use of electroplate, she will share examples from her expansive collection, bringing us into the Victorian and Edwardian eras where America took the lead with its novelty and specialty cutlery from asparagus, anchovy, lemon and oyster forks to bonbon, jelly, and olive spoons. Carolyn Tillie is a culinary historian, artist and curator. With an Master in Fine Arts in jewelry and metal smithing from California State Long Beach, she also obtained a Certified Master Chef certificate from Epicurean School in Los Angeles and a Level Two certification from the Wine Spirit Education Trust. Combining gastronomic and artistic passions, she has specialized in food-themed jewelry and artwork, and is co-founder of the Bay Area Culinary Historians. After completing Oyster, A Global History for Reaction Press, she curated several exhibitions in conjunction with the release of her 2019 book, A Feast for the Eyes — Edible Art from Apple to Zucchini. Tillie’s latest work is her reaction to the global COVID-19 pandemic entitled Mixed Emotions recently exhibited in Berkeley, CA. She is now working on biographies of two famous culinary figures. Audience members are welcome to bring along any silver pieces for an Antiques Roadshow-like. Q & A after the talk. A tasting will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your child will explore seasonal crafts, celebrating Winter through a variety of mediums such as woodworking, ceramics, textiles, glass and more. Along the way, we’ll make fun, high-quality crafts kids can take home. Our projects are geared to build and hone skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, comprehension + exploration of a variety of materials. Projects and depth of craft exploration are matched up to the child’s age and ability. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station, and they’re camp is ending as ours begins, we are happy to walk your child from their camp to the studio. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Each movie event gives residents a reason to visit their local parks after dark, deterring inappropriate loitering and park use, and bringing additional safety and security to residents’ favorite locales. Events begin as early as 5 p.m., though actual movie start times are 15 minutes after sunset. Before the movie, many locations provide additional entertainment like arts and crafts, games, costume contests, music, dancing and food trucks. FAQ: What should I bring? Plan to bring chairs or blankets for your comfort. Chairs are not provided at any of our events. Also, feel free to pack a picnic and enjoy your meal under the stars! You are invited to the Intersections Concert Series featuring The Alison Brown Quintet presents Bluegrass: Bending It with Folk and Jazz. Join UC San Diego for our Intersections Concert Series at Park & Market in the Guggenheim Theatre hosted by UC San Diego and New York-based violinist Yale Strom, one of the world’s leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer and Romani music and history. One of the most multi-faceted minds in roots music, Alison Brown is a GRAMMY-winning musician, GRAMMY-nominated producer, former investment banker (with an AB from Harvard and an MBA from UCLA) and co-founder of The Compass Records Group which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2023.  Alison grew up in La Jolla and began her musical career as a teenager in the San Diego bluegrass scene. Over the course of her career, she has expanded on her love of bluegrass and built a reputation as one of today’s most forward thinking and innovative banjo players. She is known for taking the instrument far beyond its Appalachian roots by blending bluegrass and jazz influences into a sonic tapestry that has earned praise and recognition from a variety of national tastemakers including The Wall Street Journal, CBS Sunday Morning, People, NPR and USA Today. On her new release, aptly titled "On Banjo," Alison continues her musical explorations on a set of original compositions with special guests including Steve Martin, Kronos Quartet, Sierra Hull, Anat Cohen, Sharon Isbin, Stuart Duncan and members of the Alison Brown Quintet. Alison is the recipient of the USA Artists Fellowship in Music and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. A pioneer among women in the music industry, Alison was the first female to win an Instrumentalist of the Year award from the International Bluegrass Music Association; in 2019, she became the first female 5-string banjoist to be inducted into the American Banjo Museum’s Hall of Fame. She recently worked with the Spring Valley-based Deering Banjo Company to develop the Julia Belle model low banjo in honor of the late John Hartford. Alison serves on the Board of Governors of the Recording Academy and as co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize. She lives in Nashville with her husband, bassist and Compass Records co-founder Garry West and their two children Hannah and Brendan.
