Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. It launched in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative – in sync with the County’s Live Well vision to sustain safe, healthy and thriving communities. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Each movie event gives residents a reason to visit their local parks after dark, deterring inappropriate loitering and park use, and bringing additional safety and security to residents’ favorite locales. Events begin as early as 5 p.m., though actual movie start times are 15 minutes after sunset. Before the movie, many locations provide additional entertainment like arts and crafts, games, costume contests, music, dancing and food trucks. FAQ: What should I bring? Plan to bring chairs or blankets for your comfort. Chairs are not provided at any of our events. Also, feel free to pack a picnic and enjoy your meal under the stars! Some locations will have food available, so check the Event Specifics section of each location and date for more details. Bring a sweater or light jacket – it will cool down once the sun sets. What if it rains? In the event of rain or high winds a movie may be canceled. If it rains on the day of the movie you’re planning to attend, please contact the Parks & Recreation office to get up-to-date information on possible cancellations. Contact information for each location is in the Event Specifics section of each scheduled movie. Can I bring my dog? Many parks allow dogs as long as they remain on leash. Rules are typically listed on community boards or kiosk signs – but you may also call to confirm. Always keep a close eye and clean up after your pet. Where can I park? The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture of our popular Wine & Lecture series. Richard Carrico, a well-known local historian, has a story to tell. Actually three tragically true stories of young women, one only a child, murdered in San Diego within four months of each other in 1931. San Diego’s sunny image as a beach town with quiet suburbs had a dark undercurrent of femicide. Join Richard Carrico as he discusses his new book, Monsters on the Loose, and examines the tragic murders of three such young women; Louise, Virginia, and Hazel. Over the course of the discussion, you may even find out if Richard has managed to solve one or more of these historic, true crime mysteries. Army veteran, writer, and educator grew up in San Diego and has always felt close ties to the land and its people—past and present. He is a well-respected scholar, public speaker, and researcher who has made significant contributions to understanding local Native American culture and modern history. Richard has won several awards for his research and writing. Richard’s work has appeared in more than 30 professional journals and he is the author of four non-fiction books. He also has authored stand-alone chapters in four academic books. In the southern California region, Richard is regularly called upon by print and visual news outlets on a wide range of topics including early to modern history and archaeological discoveries. Between 1975 and 2000 he was cited in more than one hundred news articles including Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Diego Union.

Oolong Gallery is happy to invite you to the upcoming show "Chiffonnier / Ragpicker" — an exhibition in dialogue between two Dutch artists: Bert Frings (Rotterdam, NL) and Bas Louter (Los Angeles, Calif.). Opening Reception May 6 from 2 - 8 p.m. | address at 6 p.m. On display at Oolong Gallery from May 6 - June 18, 2023. The title cites French artist Edouard Manet’s painting "The Ragpicker" (1865-1870). The traditional chiffonnier makes a living by picking up and selling rags and junk. Bert and Bas produce art by reusing objects and images for practical or aesthetic purposes and so prolonging their usefulness. Bas Louter and Bert Frings met in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1997, and their ongoing dialogue now continues on view at Oolong Gallery. The exhibition will be about their favorite Dutch artist René Daniëls, the influence of moving to the colossal hybrid city LA and of classical vanitas — still life paintings of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.
