From the gallery: On the evening of November 16, Quint Gallery will host UK-based artist Eric Snell for an in-situ revival of a performance which originally took place in 1986 in which Snell draws a spiral on a wall using the smoldering ash of burning wood. For this iteration, the artist will source wood from one of the city's proliferation of eucalyptus trees, which arrived in San Diego from Australia after the gold rush of 1849. Performance: Nov. 16. Opening November 8, Quint Gallery will house a selection of significant sculpture across multiple venues: 7655 Girard Ave., 7722 Girard Ave., ONE at Laura Gambucci (window), 7655 Girard Ave., and the gallery's warehouse space at 5171 Santa Fe Avenue (Suite H). Artists include: Adam Belt, Kenneth Capps, Ethan Chan, Roman de Salvo, Marcos Ramirez ERRE, Anya Gallaccio, Thomas Glassford, Robert Irwin, Jean Lowe and Kim MacConnel, John McCracken, Anne Mudge, Christopher Puzio, Sasha Koozel Reibstein, Eric Snell, Chris Thorson. More will be announced. The works selected share unique intersections across the accepted boundaries of organic and industrial forms, and span each of the last four decades. UnderScored is a multi-faceted project rooted in the intergenerational stories and memories of New York City underground club heads. Created in collaboration with legendary elders from the underground dance community, Archie Burnett, Michele Saunders and Brahms “Bravo” LaFortune, the cast ranges in age from age 28–79. This project takes shape as a series of performances, community based events and an oral history archive. Rooted in African American and Latine street and social dances, Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) explores the expansive narrative qualities of various street and club styles including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue, as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery, and find new modes of expression. Then, the Pentagon is finishing a review of its policies regarding suicide. Though the number of military suicides declined slightly last year, it remains a major problem. Military leaders are trying to address it in a number of new ways. And finally, for our weekend preview, we have music made with machines, new visual art and an indie band celebrating two great albums.

Classical Academy High School Presents "Guys and Dolls! The Broadway Musical" at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido from March 30 - April 2, 2023. Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, "Guys and Dolls" is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler, Nathan Detroit, tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they've been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy since it opened in 1950, "Guys and Dolls" takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.
