As you may know, we had previously planned a Yiddish-tango-themed fundraiser for YAAANA and Yiddishland for this November. However, following October 7th’s hair-raisingly horrific pogrom, massacre, and abduction of innocents in Israel, we decided to postpone tango for another time while we mourn for the lives lost and pray for the rapid return of the abducted, the safety of the people of Israel, and the return of peace to the Land. The event will focus instead on tikkun olam and half of the fundraiser proceeds will be provided to San Diego-based Adopt a Family Foundation, which provides support to terrorism victims in Israel. Highlighting the event will be several internationally known artists including Yuval Ron, coming to us from Los Angeles, and our board members Yale Strom, and Elizabeth Schwartz, who all generously agreed to volunteer for this special event. The program will feature storytelling and musical selections representing Yiddish and Israeli cultural traditions, intended to connect Yiddishkeit with the cultural traditions of Medines Yisroel. We hope you will take this opportunity to come together, partake in some incredible music and Israel-themed food and drink, and contribute to important causes, keeping in mind the importance of staying together, as a caring community and nation, facing multiple challenges, with resilience and determination. Create your own still life painting inspired by local artifacts from the Center’s collections. Materials will be provided. About the Instructor Jean C. Wheat was born in Harlem, New York City. Her first one woman show was on the underside of her grandmother’s kitchen table when she was three years old. Through the years Jean’s passion for creative expression has grown from underneath that kitchen table to hanging on walls around the world and public art commissions in the United States. In 1989 Jean received a scholarship to study fine art at the University of Madrid, Spain. Jean taught African American Art History for sixteen yearn at San Diego Community College. For the past 20 years Jean has been a volunteer grandparent to foster children at San Pasqual Academy in California where she shares her life and art experiences with the students and others. Oolong Gallery is happy to invite you to the upcoming show "Chiffonnier / Ragpicker" — an exhibition in dialogue between two Dutch artists: Bert Frings (Rotterdam, NL) and Bas Louter (Los Angeles, Calif.). Opening Reception May 6 from 2 - 8 p.m. | address at 6 p.m. On display at Oolong Gallery from May 6 - June 18, 2023. The title cites French artist Edouard Manet’s painting "The Ragpicker" (1865-1870). The traditional chiffonnier makes a living by picking up and selling rags and junk. Bert and Bas produce art by reusing objects and images for practical or aesthetic purposes and so prolonging their usefulness. Bas Louter and Bert Frings met in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1997, and their ongoing dialogue now continues on view at Oolong Gallery. The exhibition will be about their favorite Dutch artist René Daniëls, the influence of moving to the colossal hybrid city LA and of classical vanitas — still life paintings of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. It launched in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative – in sync with the County’s Live Well vision to sustain safe, healthy and thriving communities. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Each movie event gives residents a reason to visit their local parks after dark, deterring inappropriate loitering and park use, and bringing additional safety and security to residents’ favorite locales. Events begin as early as 5 p.m., though actual movie start times are 15 minutes after sunset. Before the movie, many locations provide additional entertainment like arts and crafts, games, costume contests, music, dancing and food trucks. FAQ: What should I bring? Plan to bring chairs or blankets for your comfort. Chairs are not provided at any of our events. Also, feel free to pack a picnic and enjoy your meal under the stars! Some locations will have food available, so check the Event Specifics section of each location and date for more details. Bring a sweater or light jacket – it will cool down once the sun sets. What if it rains? In the event of rain or high winds a movie may be canceled. If it rains on the day of the movie you’re planning to attend, please contact the Parks & Recreation office to get up-to-date information on possible cancellations.
