From the gallery: On the evening of November 16, Quint Gallery will host UK-based artist Eric Snell for an in-situ revival of a performance which originally took place in 1986 in which Snell draws a spiral on a wall using the smoldering ash of burning wood. For this iteration, the artist will source wood from one of the city's proliferation of eucalyptus trees, which arrived in San Diego from Australia after the gold rush of 1849. Performance: Nov. 16. Opening November 8, Quint Gallery will house a selection of significant sculpture across multiple venues: 7655 Girard Ave., 7722 Girard Ave., ONE at Laura Gambucci (window), 7655 Girard Ave., and the gallery's warehouse space at 5171 Santa Fe Avenue (Suite H). Barona Indian Charter School seventh graders transformed a decorative garden into one with native plants, many of which were used by the Kumeyaay people.

From the museum: This body of new work by Eva Struble explores landscape altered by humans, and human infrastructure altered and adopted by plants: mutualism, or at turns, a collision. The dreamlike landscapes are rendered in strange hues, multiple textures and painting styles, remaking familiar landscapes into uncanny sites. The title, Midden, refers to a refuse heap, made by animals or humans. Rediscovered middens, like time capsules, can give clues about the habits or desires of a group. Struble takes inspiration from locations such as a theatre hidden in the woods of Topanga, CA, to the graffitied rainwater tunnels of Adobe Falls in San Diego, to oyster farms on the Olympic Peninsula, which the artist explored on foot over the past several years before creating this work. The exhibition can be viewed in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery and the Rotunda Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037) during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. About the artist: Eva Struble’s work has been shown at Wassaic Project in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Cleveland MOCA, Lombard Freid in New York, and Angles Gallery in Santa Monica, along with public projects at San Diego Airport, the New Children’s Museum, and the San Diego County Operations Center. Struble received a BA in visual arts from Brown University and an MFA from Yale University School of Art, and she is Professor of painting and printmaking at San Diego State University. Do geniuses get a "hall pass" for their behavior? Or, do we "cancel" the art of artists who've done "monstrous" things? That's the question Claire Dederer tackles in her new book.

UnderScored is a multi-faceted project rooted in the intergenerational stories and memories of New York City underground club heads. Created in collaboration with legendary elders from the underground dance community, Archie Burnett, Michele Saunders and Brahms “Bravo” LaFortune, the cast ranges in age from age 28–79. This project takes shape as a series of performances, community based events and an oral history archive. Rooted in African American and Latine street and social dances, Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) explores the expansive narrative qualities of various street and club styles including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue, as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery, and find new modes of expression.
