  • Jennifer González is History of Art and Visual Culture professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a faculty member of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, New York. She writes about contemporary installation, digital and activist art. She has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the American Association of University Women, and the American Council of Learned Societies. Her publications have appeared in Diacritics, Camera Obscura, Bomb, Open Space, Art Journal, Aztlán the Journal of the Archives of American Art and in numerous exhibition catalogs including Jimmy Durham: At the Center of the World (2017) and most recently Diego Rivera's America (2022). Her books include "Subject to Display: Reframing Race in Contemporary Installation Art", "Pepón Osorio, and Chicano and Chicana Art: A Critical Anthology" which was included in the top art books of the decade by ArtNews in 2020.
  • Ana Aranda is the keynote speaker for the National Center for the Study of Children’s Literature Spring lecture. Join us on Thursday, March 2 at 2 p.m. in the University Library Leon Williams Room (LL430). Aranda will read from her newest book, “Our Day of the Dead”, and answer audience questions. The event is free and open to everyone. Aranda is a children’s book creator, illustrator, muralist and art instructor. Her work has been featured in galleries and museums in the United States and around the world. Her illustrations can be found in picture books including: “The Chupacabra Ate the Candelabra”; “Our Celebración!”; “Moth & Butterfly: Ta Da!”; and “How to Make a Memory”. “Our Day of the Dead” marks her debut as an author/illustrator. Aranda was born and raised in Mexico City, where she studied design. She completed her undergraduate studies in illustration at l’École de l’Image d’Épinal in France and then obtained her MFA in Illustration in San Francisco at the Academy of Art University. Her biggest inspirations are her childhood memories, the vibrant colors of Mexico, and music. Her work focuses on transforming the everyday into fantastical situations, and often include images from nature and whimsical creatures. For more information, please visit here!   • 'Mixed Nuts', our beautiful annual holiday production is celebrating it's 6th year! Performed at the stunning Joan B Kroc Theatre. LDI brings a fresh take on a holiday tradition to the stage! "Mixed Nuts" is a compelling, forward thinking production that focuses on a progressive and inclusive mentality. With conscious intention, our choice to encourage change reflects our desire to provide our students and audiences with a new experience. By crafting our own narrative, we’ve created a unified opportunity for dancers of all ages and genres to share in this inspiring story. All of our students are encouraged to be thinkers, to develop a powerful sense of self and this production creates a unique freedom to grow alongside the production rather than fit into it. With a courageous message, gorgeous dancing, and a beautiful score, "Mixed Nuts" is an engaging, must-see show for your whole family and friends.
  • It may look like there’s a lot of construction underway in San Diego, but the city is way below the estimated 13,500 new housing units a year needed to keep up with the population. Then, the Pentagon is finishing a review of its policies regarding suicide. Though the number of military suicides declined slightly last year, it remains a major problem. Military leaders are trying to address it in a number of new ways. And finally, for our weekend preview, we have music made with machines, new visual art and an indie band celebrating two great albums.

  • From the gallery: On the evening of November 16, Quint Gallery will host UK-based artist Eric Snell for an in-situ revival of a performance which originally took place in 1986 in which Snell draws a spiral on a wall using the smoldering ash of burning wood. For this iteration, the artist will source wood from one of the city's proliferation of eucalyptus trees, which arrived in San Diego from Australia after the gold rush of 1849. Performance: Nov. 16.   • Opening November 8, Quint Gallery will house a selection of significant sculpture across multiple venues: 7655 Girard Ave., 7722 Girard Ave., ONE at Laura Gambucci (window), 7655 Girard Ave., and the gallery's warehouse space at 5171 Santa Fe Avenue (Suite H).
