Join us for our next “History Talks!” Lecture on Wednesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. Manager Aditi Worcester and Archivist Kiera Sullivan from the San Diego County Archives team will talk about the archival records that can be found in the County’s new state-of-the-art Archives facility in Santee. The County Archives includes an estimated 65,000 recorded maps, 250 cubic ft. of historic birth, death and marriage records, 600 cubic ft. of official records, and around 40,000 rolls of microfilm. History Talks! is a monthly lecture series presented by the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House. Each month a local historian or specialist will delve into topics related to San Diego and the Davis-Horton House to bring a unique glimpse into the history of our city. Come hear history come alive! On Saturday, December 2, 2023, as the visiting Gaden Shartse Monks complete their week of sand mandala building and Tibetan blessing rituals at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas with a theme of loving kindness, friendship, compassion, and world peace, Cardiff author and filmmaker Sharon Janis will offer a “Mandala Sanctuary Celebration of Divine Music, Peace, and Generosity,” event at 6 p.m., during which she will present her one-hour documentary film, “Peace Pilgrim: An American Sage Who Walked Her Talk,” with a short discussion about “Peace Pilgrim’s Timeless Wisdom in Today’s World.” This FREE program will include Kirtan chanting and other devotional singing by Sharon, who is also known by the Sanskrit name “Kumuda,” and will end with the monks’ Tibetan Buddhist Blessing with their traditional instruments.

From the museum: This body of new work by Eva Struble explores landscape altered by humans, and human infrastructure altered and adopted by plants: mutualism, or at turns, a collision. The dreamlike landscapes are rendered in strange hues, multiple textures and painting styles, remaking familiar landscapes into uncanny sites. The title, Midden, refers to a refuse heap, made by animals or humans. Rediscovered middens, like time capsules, can give clues about the habits or desires of a group. Struble takes inspiration from locations such as a theatre hidden in the woods of Topanga, CA, to the graffitied rainwater tunnels of Adobe Falls in San Diego, to oyster farms on the Olympic Peninsula, which the artist explored on foot over the past several years before creating this work. The exhibition can be viewed in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery and the Rotunda Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037) during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. About the artist: Eva Struble’s work has been shown at Wassaic Project in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Cleveland MOCA, Lombard Freid in New York, and Angles Gallery in Santa Monica, along with public projects at San Diego Airport, the New Children’s Museum, and the San Diego County Operations Center. Struble received a BA in visual arts from Brown University and an MFA from Yale University School of Art, and she is Professor of painting and printmaking at San Diego State University. UnderScored is a multi-faceted project rooted in the intergenerational stories and memories of New York City underground club heads. Created in collaboration with legendary elders from the underground dance community, Archie Burnett, Michele Saunders and Brahms “Bravo” LaFortune, the cast ranges in age from age 28–79. This project takes shape as a series of performances, community based events and an oral history archive. Rooted in African American and Latine street and social dances, Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) explores the expansive narrative qualities of various street and club styles including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue, as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery, and find new modes of expression.
