  • Justin Sterling's installation at San Diego Museum of Art explores bad faith practices, whether in policing, economics, legislation or interpersonal connections. By throwing rocks through windows then reassembling them as stained glass, Sterling asks: is this healed?
  • Peter Fay’s worldwide travels have provided a constant source of inspiration and material for his expansive portfolio. He has captured award-winning photographic treasures in exotic locales across the globe. His fusion of light, color, and forms create powerful dramatic images spanning genres of landscape, portraiture, wildlife, documentary and fine art photography. The equipment he uses is of secondary importance. The subject matter treated can be almost anything but it is crucial that it is first “seen.” Its subsequent photographic capture involves a visual distillation process aimed at finding the essence of the subject along with a number of other factors. All distractions must be minimized or eliminated. When on occasion all that comes together, there is nothing more gratifying. Fay’s exhibition titled “The Way I See It” is composed of 60 pieces structured into 4 groupings highlighting Fay’s interests: Nature, Portraiture, Americana and Automobiles shared in an unusual way. 20 of the pieces are on metal and 40 of the pieces are on archival paper. Gallery hours: Open Tuesday-Sunday 11a.m. - 5 p.m., and anytime by appointment Visit: https://www.bfreestudio.net/

  • Join us on January 13, 2023 at 5:30pm for an evening filled with visual and auditory experiences that explore the works of ICA San Diego Artist-in-Resident, Shellie Zhang. The evening will begin with an artist talk by Zhang, who will give us insight into her artistic practice, ideas, and research centered on diasporic communities, marketplaces, and Chinatowns. Zhang will discuss the two bodies of work in her exhibition, What We Bring and Leave, and her new residency project. Stay for a performance by Art of Elan showcasing San Diego-based, award-winning composer Lei Liang, whose work combines East and West in a colorful and dramatic fusion in orchestral, theatrical, and chamber pieces. Zhang and Liang introduce the performance with an in-conversation where they will discuss ideas of home, language, and diasporic communities – themes that run through both of their practices. Art of Elan is thrilled to collaborate with ICA San Diego for a season of programs inspired by ICA San Diego’s Artists-in-Residence highlighting different artistic approaches to the expression of ideas.
