Qué onda, friends! It's an incredible moment to be a soccer fan in San Diego and across the border region! The arrival of San Diego FC, Major League Soccer's newest franchise, has unleashed a wave of soccer fever throughout the entire community. We tagged along with Barra 18, one of the official supporter groups of SDFC, to catch an away game and learn firsthand what's got fans buzzing with excitement. Later, we sat with KPBS's Jacob Aere, producer of the digital mini-series “Soccer a la frontera” to talk about the history and culture of soccer in the region and putting this 5-part series together. The Urban Greening Community workshop is an event discussing existing green spaces and planning for the addition of other green spaces, tree spaces, community led maintenance in Southeastern San Diego, specifically for the neighborhoods of Chollas View, Emerald Hills, and Lincoln Park. This free family-friendly workshop will host interactive activities facilitated by the Urban Greening Taskforce that will target community member feedback for the development of the following three subtasks of the UG: - Community led maintenance for green spaces, tree spaces - Identification of green and tree spaces in project area - Conceptual designs for green spaces and tree spaces in project area Join us to learn more about the Community Planning Collaborative for a Green Southeastern San Diego, a planning project funded by the Transformative Climate Communities led by UCP and various community based organizations and community members. Claudia Rodríguez-Biezunski, better known as Sew Loka, is a San Diego-based textile artist and fashion designer who has made a significant impact in the intersection of streetwear, sustainability, Chicana culture, and DIY fashion. She gained prominence for her distinctive style of customizing and upcycling clothing, while only using recycled, reclaimed and repurposed fabrics to create all of her one of a kind fashion designs and textile art pieces. Beyond her fashion work, Rodríguez-Biezunski is also known for her commitment to community engagement and teaching others the art of sewing and customization. Graduate studios, classrooms, labs, and galleries will be filled with art and open for viewing. Students and faculty will be on hand to show their work, demonstrate art processes, answer questions, and provide tours. No RSVP is required, and this event is free to attend and open to all!
