Join us for an opening reception on Friday, January 27, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. San Diego and Tijuana are geographically and historically sister cities, but in many ways today, they can seem worlds apart. Art and culture continue to bridge the physical boundary between the countries, fostering ongoing connections between creators and patrons in both regions. Paisanos, a project coordinated by the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura de Tijuana, is dedicated to developing a formal discussion surrounding migration and movement, and has brought together a collection of two-dimensional artworks whose narratives are inspired by their creator’s proximity to the border and life between two countries. Sparks Gallery and the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura de Tijuana are pleased to jointly present this collection in “Paisanos México,” opening January 2023 at Sparks Gallery in downtown San Diego (530 Sixth Avenue). Sparks Gallery fosters collaboration through art exhibitions, and is pleased to host its first international exhibition with artists from the Tijuana region. The exhibition consists of 17 pieces made in a variety of mediums by the following artists: Luis Alderete, Carlos Castrejón, Laura Lehman, Pablo Castañeda, Francisco Chávez Corrujedo, Carlos Coronado Ortega, Angela González, Ruth Hernández Ortíz, Virinia Lizardi, Daniel Marquéz, Antonio Oceguera Figueroa, Francisco Postlethwaite, Margarita Torres, Gerardo Diego, Ligia Santillan, Tony Beltran, and Liz Vaillard. Over the course of 90 fascinating (and often funny!) minutes, the audience will witness the professional & personal trials that crafted Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the icon we know today. Despite obstacles like losing her mother the day before her high school graduation, to studying law at Harvard while raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer, to fighting for women’s rights in front of all-male courts in the 1970s, and more, a compassionate face of straight-thinking American justice emerges from it all. This new play, written by Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes, is a joyful heart-to-heart with a true American original. The creative team is completed by director Laley Lippard and actress Michelle Azar, starring as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “All Things Equal – The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg” is proudly presented by San Diego Theatres at Balboa Theatre in the Gaslamp District on March 23-24, 2023. Next month, the La Jolla Art Association will feature artist Valerie Saiag. Valerie earned a dual degree in Art History and Studio Art from UC San Diego. Painting and sculpture are central to her art practice. She has presented her research by invitation at UCSD, Berkeley, Stanford and Harvard and has taught sections on writing, translation and history through her alma mater. According to Valerie, "It is a pleasure to share art. Culture in all its forms, from linguistic to artistic is the creativity which makes us fully human. Since childhood, most of us innately know that we must create. We draw, we paint, we build sandcastles, we gather sticks and pebbles. we have been creating art across the globe since our caveman days. Today, scientific research has shown that this creativity is mandatory for humankind's mental and physical well being. If any among us doubted the research, our days of COVID-era isolations should have proved it to us when, worldwide, people started gathering artwork and plants to make their homes comfortable--a creative endeavor in itself. This is not a capricious whim, rather our creativity is our greatest need and greatest capacity. It comes shining though even for the greatest scientists, as it is their creative intellect which allows them to innovate. I wish to bring hope and joy to those who are drawn to my art. May it bring them a sense of peace in these days and always." This month's demonstration will focus on how local, national and international artists brand themselves through their artist statements, biographies and resumes or CVs. Dec. 6-13, 2022 Join us for the first student exhibition since the pandemic! The Fall 2022 Art Exhibition features artworks in a variety of media including drawing, design, digital media, printmaking, photography, painting, ceramics, fashion and sculpture, all produced by students enrolled in Studio Art classes and the Fashion Department. All aspects of the exhibition were designed and executed by the San Diego Mesa College Museum Studies class under the direction of Professor Alessandra Moctezuma and Gallery Coordinator Jenny Armer. Through the Painted Object Design Challenge workshops held in spring 2023, led by artists Marisol Rendón and Ingram Ober, young participants crafted model sculptures and museum guests voted for their favorite. Rendón and Ober then fabricated the sculpture with the most votes. At Mass Creativity 2023 the "Loving Dragon" was finally revealed as the winner! Printmaking has a long history as a tool for raising awareness about social issues and inspiring others to action. During this 2.5-hour workshop session, participants will be encouraged to experiment with simple printmaking techniques to create a print that raises awareness and expresses a personal statement about what they care about most. Get inspired as we creatively engage together! Desiree will share examples of how artists combine activism and printmaking to invite others to engage in social justice topics. Participants will be able to take home a finished artwork. Desiree Aspiras (she/her) is an educator, therapist, and printmaker in San Diego who deeply values how art can transform us and connect us to meaning. Her printmaking and book arts projects have been exhibited in spaces in San Diego, including the Athenaeum Art Center. She is the founder of Printmakers Against Racism, a project she started which engages printmakers across the world to make and sell prints and donate their proceeds to support racial justice. She is also a mindfulness facilitator and founder of Deep Breath Network, where she hopes to create diverse and welcoming spaces to share contemplative practices to support personal and social transformation with change-makers here in San Diego and beyond. She currently teaches at University of San Diego and Bastyr University California.
