This month’s Second Tuesday Tastings at Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill in the former Hotel del Coronado Boathouse on Coronado Island honors both National Seafood Month in October and the restaurant’s ongoing “Taste of Spain” seasonal culinary focus. For the Oct. 10 Second Tuesday Tasting, local chefs will pair Panko Artichoke Hearts with Brava Sauce and Chipotle Blackened Swordfish with Abadia de San Campio Albarino and Marques de Riscal Verdejo wines from Spain, respectively. Guests will sail aboard a replica of a gold rush era revenue cutter and learn of the history of sailing and exploration in San Diego, tales of whaling and sea otter trade, local sea battles, the art of the ship’s gunnery, and life at sea. The history of illuminated manuscripts is filled with beauty and intrigue. These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe had painted embellishments often utilizing precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Their subject matter was usually Christian scripture, practice, and lore. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600 and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries. Between the 13th and 15th centuries upper class patrons supported the creation of private workshops that flourished primarily in French and Italian cities and their surrounding courts. One only has to look at the masterpiece Les Tres Riches Heures du duc de Berry by the noted Limbourg Brothers to understand how amazing and prized these handmade books were. By 1440, however, their popularity began to diminish with the ability to mass produce books with the advent of the printing press. In this docent-led talk, significant manuscripts will be discussed along with their influence on the art of the late Medieval and early Renaissance. San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) hosts its third annual spring orchid showcase, World of Orchids, running Saturday, March 11 through Sunday, April 9, 2023. The exhibition will be staged in the state-of-the-art, 8,000 square foot, glass-enclosed facility, the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory, by SDBG’s highly awarded Artist-in-Residence, René van Rems, AIFD, who serves as Creative Director for the exhibit for the third year in a row. The floral designs will feature impressive orchid specimens, locally bred hybrids, and rare species plants displayed in unique and unexpected ways. In addition to the many orchids that typically grow in the Garden’s Conservatory, displays will include plants on loan from private growers belonging to two local groups, the San Diego County Orchid Society (SDCOS) and the Palomar Orchid Society, as well as orchids and materials from local businesses. On select days during the exhibition, vendors will offer unusual and unique orchids and merchandise for sale.
