Four contemporary artists breathe new life into some of humanity’s oldest artforms, icons and monuments, creating paintings, sculptures, and films out of everyday objects and popular culture. Includes Michelle Obama portrait painter Amy Sherald.

Although the High Renaissance lasted for only a short period of time, it saw the production of some of the most exceptional artistic creations in the Italian states. Rome, which was the capital of the Papal States, and Florence were the two primary locations where High Renaissance artists flourished. Most art historians believe that the High Renaissance began around 1495 and ended around 1520 with the death of the great painter Raphael. While others believe that the Sack of Rome by the army of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, ended it circa 1527. The masters who seem to define the High Renaissance include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante. Painting during the High Renaissance is considered today to be the absolute zenith of western art. This period of time revealed many artistic advancement; such as linear perspective, realism, and the manipulation of light and darkness including the use of chiaroscuro. Compositions displayed balance, harmony, and a look back at the advancements in art made by the early Greeks and Romans. The paintings in the Vatican by Michelangelo and Raphael are considered by most scholars to represent the culmination of High Renaissance style. Join us at Garibaldi to learn the art of cyanotype, a 170 year old photographic printing process that uses sunlight to produce prints in a distinctive dark greenish-blue, and enjoy delicious sustainable seafood dishes all while supporting ocean conservation. Oriana Poindexter will guide guests as they create their own frame worthy cyanotype, or sun print, to take home using native kelp, seaweed and natural materials harvested responsibly from San Diego's ocean and shoreline. During the interactive workshop, guests will enjoy tray-passed bites including Culurgiones Friti with local rock crab, potato, telligio and brown butter emulsion; Local Opah Meatballs served with a spicy ‘nduja tomato sauce, sheep milk yogurt, and mint; and Sogliole Alla Parmigiana made with San Diego sand dabs, mirto fume, pecorino sardo, frisée, sea grass, and parsley. A full bar featuring Garibaldi’s signature cocktails will also be available for purchase. Following the workshop, guests will enjoy local oysters, shellfish and Baja yellowtail crudo station, along with interaction and kelp forest education by Reef Check. 25% of all ticket sales will be donated to Reef Check, a non-profit organization leading citizen scientists to promote stewardship of sustainable reef communities worldwide, including San Diego's local kelp forests. The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture in the Wine and Lecture series as we host the team from the San Diego County Archives for Preservation Month to talk about archival records in the County’s new state-of-the-art Archives facility in Santee. The County Archives include an estimated 65,000 recorded maps, 250 cubic ft. of historic birth, death, and marriage records, 600 cubic ft. of official records, and around 40,000 rolls of microfilm. Despite obstacles like losing her mother the day before her high school graduation, to studying law at Harvard while raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer, to fighting for women’s rights in front of all-male courts in the 1970s, and more, a compassionate face of straight-thinking American justice emerges from it all. This new play, written by Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes, is a joyful heart-to-heart with a true American original. The creative team is completed by director Laley Lippard and actress Michelle Azar, starring as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “All Things Equal – The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg” is proudly presented by San Diego Theatres at Balboa Theatre in the Gaslamp District on March 23-24, 2023.
