  • MCASD has partnered with Space Time, an organization that cultivates time-based art works, to produce a series of events that consider works on display while presenting rare artist videos and live performances and lectures. See works by two artists, Jacolby Satterwhite and Super Squirrel (Sarah Hankins), that incorporate found material to critique pop culture and imagine better worlds. This program is presented in partnership with Space Time and in conjunction with "Alexis Smith: The American Way." It takes place during Free Third Thursday in Jacobs Hall on January 19, from 5 p.m. –7 p.m. with performances at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Satterwhite’s video "Country Ball 1989-2012" (2012) fuses drawing, live performance and digital technology to translate and document personal mythology. Here the artist's sources are a home video of a family cookout and his mother's drawings. Hand-tracing the drawings and importing them into a 3D animation program, Satterwhite builds a lush, computer-generated landscape. Super Squirrel (Sarah Hankins) is a DJ, producer, ethnomusicologist, and electronic noisemaker. Working with samples, VSTs, and analog synths, she explores themes of psychopathology, the carnivalesque, horror, oddity, intimacy, and haunting. In live performance, she creates quasi-narratives by way of irrational pop/electronic/folk mashups, which are smeared with noise and paired with curious videos. • Join us at Garibaldi to learn the art of cyanotype, a 170 year old photographic printing process that uses sunlight to produce prints in a distinctive dark greenish-blue, and enjoy delicious sustainable seafood dishes all while supporting ocean conservation. Oriana Poindexter will guide guests as they create their own frame worthy cyanotype, or sun print, to take home using native kelp, seaweed and natural materials harvested responsibly from San Diego's ocean and shoreline. During the interactive workshop, guests will enjoy tray-passed bites including Culurgiones Friti with local rock crab, potato, telligio and brown butter emulsion; Local Opah Meatballs served with a spicy ‘nduja tomato sauce, sheep milk yogurt, and mint; and Sogliole Alla Parmigiana made with San Diego sand dabs, mirto fume, pecorino sardo, frisée, sea grass, and parsley. A full bar featuring Garibaldi’s signature cocktails will also be available for purchase. Following the workshop, guests will enjoy local oysters, shellfish and Baja yellowtail crudo station, along with interaction and kelp forest education by Reef Check. 25% of all ticket sales will be donated to Reef Check, a non-profit organization leading citizen scientists to promote stewardship of sustainable reef communities worldwide, including San Diego's local kelp forests. • From the museum: MCASD Staff Art Showcase opens this Thursday, December 15, concurrent with Free Third Thursday (10 a.m. - 8 p.m). Every day, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego benefits from the dedicated efforts of our staff, whether they interface with our public in the galleries, or labor behind the scenes, keeping us operational and programmed. Many of our staff members have chosen to work at MCASD because they themselves are artists. We have mounted staff exhibitions in the past, yet these shows were presented in the offices, and the audience was limited to employees. This season, we are excited to feature our staff’s artwork as a community exhibition in our Axline Court. Featuring works by: Zachary Abramson (@lardvarkin), Lead Museum Educator Anira Abreu (@abreu.ani), Visitor Engagement Ambassador Pantcho Atanassov, Security Services Representative Natalie Avery, Membership and Giving Circle Associate Aidan Braito, Facilites Engineer Paul Chien, Security Services Representative Alannah Dye, Venue Specialist Georgina Flores (@musgrl), Visitor Engagement Ambassador George Garcia (@broaderthanbroadway), Manager, Security Services Marina Grize (@marinagrize), Creative Producer Chris Hincke, Database Manager Mayce Keeler (@keelercat), Visitor Engagement Ambassador Maru Lopez (@marugenia2), Supervisor, Museum Educator Alexander Mazegue (@alexandermazegue), Preparator, AV Technician, Collections and Exhibitions Summer Padilla Elliott (@summer.padilla), Lead Visitor Engagement Ambassador Jared Padilla Elliott (@padillaelliott), Venue Specialist Charlie Pintado (@chachiebears), Visitor Engagement Ambassador Marcos Rebello, Security Services Representative Dante Rowley (@danterowley), Manager, The Shop Norma Schwab, Museum Educator Collete Tamayo (@colletetamayo), Lead Museum Educator Reed Vickerman, CFO/COO Jeremy Woodall (@jeremywoodall), Chief Preparator, Collections and Exhibitions Sophy Zepeda (@sketchbook.definition), Security Services Representative Related links: MCASD on Instagram MCASD on Facebook
  • Over the course of 90 fascinating (and often funny!) minutes, the audience will witness the professional & personal trials that crafted Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the icon we know today. Despite obstacles like losing her mother the day before her high school graduation, to studying law at Harvard while raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer, to fighting for women’s rights in front of all-male courts in the 1970s, and more, a compassionate face of straight-thinking American justice emerges from it all. This new play, written by Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes, is a joyful heart-to-heart with a true American original. The creative team is completed by director Laley Lippard and actress Michelle Azar, starring as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “All Things Equal – The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg” is proudly presented by San Diego Theatres at Balboa Theatre in the Gaslamp District on March 23-24, 2023. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster. We hope you join us for this special pre-Broadway engagement!
