For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’ illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet, to this day, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate. Exclusive Collections will share a compelling selection of artworks from "The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection" at the 212 S. Cedros Ave. #104, Solana Beach, California, Nov. 26 – Dec. 24. Hours are Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books, as well as "The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss," a mind-expanding collection based on decades of artwork, which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’s three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names such as Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast, to name a few. Additionally, Ted’s cat was never far from his artist thoughts. He drew himself as The Cat Behind the Hat, his cat was the protagonist in several of his Secret Art paintings and, as a fun aside, many of his early advertisements and cartoons had a “cat bystander” witnessing all the action. They hinted at his adventures across the world, his reclusive sensibility despite his fame, and his penchant for the childlike fantasy and humor, which infused nearly every facet of his life. Despite the unprecedented demand during his lifetime, no limited edition artworks were ever conceived, authorized, or created until this historic project began in 1997, six years after Geisel’s death. That year, this exclusive project put into motion a series of artworks and exhibitions, which firmly established him as one of the most iconic artistic talents of the 20th century. Each of these Estate-Authorized limited editions has been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, or sculptures. Additionally, each work bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature, identifying the work as an authorized limited edition commissioned by the Dr. Seuss Estate. In her preface to the popular coffee table book on this collection, "The Cat Behind the Hat," Audrey Geisel (Ted Geisel’s widow) writes, “I’m gratified to carry out Ted’s wishes and have these works revealed to the world.” Join us for a fascinating glimpse into the unique artistic vision of Theodor Seuss Geisel! From the gallery: For her exhibition Graft at ICA San Diego, artist Edra Soto (b.1971, Puerto Rico; lives and works in Chicago, IL) continues to create the site-specific installations that have defined this project since 2012. Using a range of materials from aluminum and PVC, to concrete and wood, Soto generates a sculptural language to express her experience navigating the Puerto Rican diaspora. For more than a decade, she has transposed two common and beloved elements of Puerto Rican residential architecture into foreign environments: the geometrically-patterned rejas (wrought-iron gates) and quiebrasoles (decorative concrete breeze blocks) that surround many of the island’s homes. This reconstruction of such distinctly Puerto Rican structures in faraway places offers a poetic meditation on national identity, displacement, and belonging. Read more here. During Meet the Artist hours, the public is invited to speak with Edra Soto and contribute to an upcoming project. While in residence at the ICA San Diego, Soto will be crafting a fabric and metal flag out of four-pointed aluminum stars. This project, an expanded version of Soto’s 2021 work, Tropicalamerica 21, takinges inspiration from the all-black Puerto Rican flag, which has become a symbol of Puerto Rican independence, resistance to colonialism, and civil disobedience since 2016. Soto invites the community to join her in the construction of this flag, and will teach visitors how to make the four-pointed aluminum stars. The internationally noted Australian Haydn Ensemble, one of Australia’s leading orchestras specializing in historically informed performances, will kick off its nine-city US Tour at the Prebys Concert Hall at UC San Diego (7600 Fay Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037), on Friday evening, Oct. 13, 2023, 7:30 p.m. From San Diego, the ensemble is going to appear on both the west and east coasts (October 12-21). The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) is hosting its 13th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival from February 2 to 9. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will feature critically acclaimed films on topics including child care and education, environmental protection, gender equity, trans and Indigenous rights, women’s rights and more. On February 9, MOPA and Human Rights Watch will feature a special Q&A with the filmmakers behind "Uýra" (2022) About the film: Uýra, a transgender Indigenous artist, travels through the Amazon on a journey of self-discovery using performance art to teach Indigenous youth that they are the guardians of ancestral messages of the Amazon Forest. In a country that kills an incredibly high number of transgender, Indigenous and environmentalist youth of any country , Uýra leads a rising movement while fostering unity and providing inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ and environmental movements in the heart of the Amazon Forest. This event will feature director Juliana Curi, producer Martina Sönksen and special guests. Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, starting with his self-titled debut which went to No. 8 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The album spawned four Top 5 singles, including “Hold on to the Nights” and “Don’t Mean Nothing,” which earned him a Grammy® nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
