On Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m., at Warwick’s Books in La Jolla, Lawton will sign and read from the book, where readers of Irish history, true crime, and courtroom drama will learn the story of Irish refugee Kevin Barry Artt, whose life parallels the history of the modern Troubles. Narrative nonfiction book “ABOVE THE GROUND: A True Story of the Troubles in Northern Ireland,” published by WildBlue Press, features debut author (and San Diego attorney) Dan Lawton’s deep dive into the story of the false conviction of an innocent man for an Irish Republican Army murder, and his daring escape from the Maze prison amid the grim and bloody conflict known as the Troubles during the early 1980s in Northern Ireland. "ABOVE THE GROUND: A True Story of the Troubles in Northern Ireland" is a gripping chronicle of one of the darkest periods in Northern Ireland's history. It is a tale of survival and redemption of an innocent man against all odds. Themes of injustice, perseverance, and hope emerge in the story of Artt's escape and struggle against an unjust legal system and two mighty legal adversaries – the British and U.S. governments. Lawton's short fiction, essays, and columns have appeared in The Recorder, Los Angeles Daily Journal, The Pensive Quill, The Daily Transcript, and Sheepshead Review. Panelists include: - Kelsea Jacobsen, Solana Center’s Environmental Education Programs Manager, will serve as the panel moderator. She has a BA in Environmental Studies with a Focus in Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems from UC Santa Cruz. - Nancy Zadrozny of Ramona’s International Equestrian Center has a background in horticulture and ecology, along with 15 years experience as vice president of an engineering construction firm. She served as manager of the San Diego Country Estates’ Equestrian Centers for five years and is currently the manager of their Landscape Department. She is also a member of Back Country Horsemen, San Vicente Saddle Club, and the Ramona Trails Association. - Craig Kolodge, Ph.D., is the former academic advisor, field plant pathologist and county director for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in Santa Clara County. He currently serves as the Business Development and Sustainability Manager for San Pasqual Valley Soils. Craig is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) and an expert in the use of compost-based Sustainable Management Practices (SMPs) for storm water management and industrial pollution management (Trainer of Record for Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner – QISP statewide program). - Josh Robinson holds a Master’s Degree in Ecological Landscape Design. He is the director and co-founder of the San Diego Sustainable Living Institute and is a principal landscape designer for Ecology Artisans. His work has been featured in two books: Art Ludwig’s Create an Oasis with Greywater, and Toby Hemenway’s Gaia’s Garden. Saturday, January 28 from 1 – 3 p.m. Instructor: Suzanne Balestri With Valentine’s Day around the corner, wow your sweetie or show your windows, potted plants, and gardens some love with fused glass art! Learn the basics of Kiln-Formed (“Fused”) Glass and create your own glass garden and/or window decor to beautify your indoor and outdoor spaces!! This workshop is great for all skill levels including beginners! You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, what tools are used in creating a basic piece, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your project. You will then create your pieces using a colorful array of provided glass and embellishments that you will adhere onto your glass “canvas”. Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse your design into one piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. The workshop fee includes all materials, equipment, pre-workshop instruction videos, and kiln firing for two pieces. Additional sun catchers or garden sticks can be made for $10 each. Beginners welcome! This workshop is appropriate for ages 13 and up. Belly up & Crssd present Stavroz and DJ TA. Hailing from the land of compromise in the heart of Europe, the four friends of Stavroz found each other in the east of Flanders. In its inception, IJsbrand De Wilde & Gert Beazar focussed mainly on playing DJ sets and creating music in which they loved colliding worlds. Only a few years later they hooked up with Maxim Helincks & Pieter De Meester to expand their DJ activities to a performing band and continued to try and find an unbeaten path in electronic music. This culminated in their delicately acoustic, organic and cinematic approach to electronic music. As a result they were awarded second place for "best producer" and "best breakthrough artist" in national awards for Belgium's electronic music scene.
