The San Diego Watercolor Society proudly presents “Do You Hear What I Hear," an Art Exhibition, juried by award-winning artist, Tiffanie Mang. The water-based media exhibition runs November 27-December 31, 2022 at our Gallery in The ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station. Little Fish Comic Book Studio: Fostering awareness and education for the comic art As a nonprofit educational corporation serving the San Diego region, Little Fish Comic Book Studio is dedicated to developing an appreciation of the comic art form through classes and camps directed to students of all ages and creeds, while through community partnerships and local events making an impact on the education of the public at large. Our goals are to educate students using the standards of a traditional art school and the comic book industry with the passion and the openness of a relaxed studio environment. Little Fish aims to give each student, regardless of their prior educational backgrounds, age or identity, a realistic, working understanding of what it takes to be a professional comic creator, all while giving them the catered instruction designed to better them as individual artists at a pace that works best for them. This series is part of One Book, One San Diego program: One Book, One San Diego is our region's premier literary program, presented in partnership between KPBS and over 80 public libraries, service organizations and educational institutions. Edward Davis (USA). Entitled "Spolia", this year's festival explores the traces of the past recast into unique new expressions, just as ancient artifacts are reincorporated into newer architecture to become spolia. Inspired by Katherine Balch's Musica Spolia, this theme threads through works including Yu Kuwabara's Five Images-In nomine and Adam Greene's Memos, and works incorporating recorded sound fragments like D. Edward Davis's broad call and Kay He's On the Rime of the Fading Forest. The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) is hosting its 13th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival from Feb. 2 to 9. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will feature critically acclaimed films on topics including child care and education, environmental protection, gender equity, trans and Indigenous rights, women’s rights and more. This hybrid film festival features in-person screenings of select films, plus opportunities to watch films virtually at any time throughout the festival. Films include: Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. PST (Opening Night – in-person only screening and reception at Museum of Photographic Arts) "Clarissa's Battle" (2022) Single mother and organizer Clarissa Doutherd is building a powerful coalition of parents. They’re fighting for childcare and early education funds, desperately needed by low and middle-income parents and children across the United States. Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. PST (Q&A featuring Fazila Amiri, the director, and Fereshta Abbasi, researcher in the Asia division at Human Rights Watch and film participants) "And Still I Sing" (2022) by Fazila Amiri Afghan Star, a popular national televised singing contest has never had a female winner. But that is about to change. The feminist Afghan pop icon Aryana Sayeed takes two female singers under her wing and with each episode they defy the odds – winning the hearts and minds of the public, and pushing the national conversation on women’s rights along the way. When the Taliban suddenly take power – these brave artists must decide whether to stay and fight for their rights or to escape abroad to safety. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. PST (Q&A with Andrea Patiño Contreras, the director, and the film participant Karina Lopez) "#IAmVanessaGuillen" (2022) by Andrea Patiño In 2018, a US soldier, Karina Lopez, survived a sexual assault at Fort Hood military base. When Vanessa Guillen, another Latina service member, disappears and is then murdered, Karina steps forward to share her story, creating the #IAmVanessaGuillen hashtag. Hundreds of service members chime in, exposing the cycle of abuse occurring on military bases and demanding justice. Thursday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. PST (Q&A with director Juliana Curi and producer Martina Sönksen) "Uýra: The Rising Forest" (2022) Uýra, a transgender Indigenous artist, travels through the Amazon on a journey of self-discovery using performance art to teach Indigenous youth that they are the guardians of ancestral messages of the Amazon Forest. In a country that kills an incredibly high number of transgender, Indigenous and environmentalist youth of any country , Uýra leads a rising movement while fostering unity and providing inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ and environmental movements in the heart of the Amazon Forest. San Dieguito Art Guild presents its eleventh annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive (corner of Encinitas Blvd and Balour), Encinitas. The San Dieguito Art Guild, is a 200-member all-volunteer nonprofit organization that operates the Off Track Gallery located in the Lumberyard Shopping Center in Encinitas. Run by a board of 15 elected Directors, SDAG was organized in 1965 by a group of artists for the purpose of promoting greater understanding and appreciation of the fine arts. Karen Fidel, one of the event organizers, says, “This event gives local artists a venue to offer their hand-made items to the public. And gives the shoppers a chance to purchase one-of-a-kind artworks, which cannot be found in chain stores. There are no imported items at this Bazaar. In addition, the buyer is purchasing work directly from the artist and can meet them face to face.” Guild President Judianne Shannon says, “Even if you have been to our Holiday Bazaar in the past, there are new artists and new items to see. All of our artists have been juried into this show so that the buyer can be assure of a quality product.” There will be a Silent Auction of artworks donated by the participating artists. Cheryl DeLain, jewelry artist says, “Our artwork is special because it is from all local artists and often of local scenes. Our Bazaar features really special deals on silent auction items where the proceeds help support our Off Track Gallery.” Each of the participating artists have a real passion for their craft and it shows.
