Reynoso @jreynoso25 Jorge Sanchez Derrick Herrera As described by the curator Karla Garcia: The Kumeyaay people have lived on this land since time immemorial. Our story is vast, complex, resilient, and never-ending. We are artists, singers, dancers, filmmakers, organizers, advocates, educators, and keepers of our culture. Our stories have been passed down for more than 60 generations on this land, much has been lost but so much has remained. Beyond what we have kept for over 12,000 years, today we create new stories, grow as a community and instill who we are in the next generation of indigenous youth. Our tribe pre-dates the United States, Mexico, and the U.S./ Mexico border. Yet we are divided by these nations and European-American-made walls. Families have been divided, a tribe cut in half, and our way of life was forever changed. Yet we are still here, on both sides of the border, each person, each family, band, community, and ejido, holds a different piece of our story. Today we will show you some of the pieces that we have in hopes that you may see us and that you may listen. • Curator Gallery Walk-Through for The Shape of Color, the Weight of Light. San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery hosts this exhibition of pictorial and sculptural investigations on color, light and texture, featuring recent artworks by San Diego-based artists Christian Garcia-Olivo, Kaori Fukuyama and Melissa Walter. The advent of Modernism inspired artists to explore abstraction and in the 20th century painters were motivated to pursue explorations with a variety of media in order to capture both the material and the immaterial. Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, physically vigorous in form and action, can be contrasted with the ethereal rigor of perceptual light works by the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 60s and 70s; and to the interest on phenomenology of some conceptual art. The three artists whose works are assembled together in The Weight of Color, The Shape of Light, delve into these legacies; there’s a push and pull of the picture plane, a celebration of both organic and synthetic pigments while surface and materials are manipulated in novel and unexpected ways. Hear from Alessandra Moctezuma, curator and gallery director. SD Mesa College: Facebook Instagram

  • Throughout history, women have used knowledge of herbs, moon cycles, and connections to nature for medicine, cooking, midwifery, and spiritual practices. Unfortunately, women, mostly indigenous, non-Christian, or non-white women, have had these home remedies and practices weaponized against them with false accusations of witchcraft and harm to society. Participants in this class will learn about herbs and make their own herbal candles. The activity will allow individuals to learn about herbal properties and personalize their candles by anointing them with herbs.
