Join Museum educators for a special workshop inspired by the practice of sobremesa, cherished by artist Alfredo Castañeda. Sobremesa refers to the moments when a meal extends into lingering conversation, when guests talk, listen to music, and reflect on life and ideas. This workshop invites participants to gather in community, engage in both prompted and organic conversation, and take part in an art-making activity inspired by Castañeda’s work and practice. Resonance is a free, all-ages event hosted by St. Brigid’s Episcopal Church and Oceanside Theatre Company that builds community through creative expression. Held in OTC's Studio 219 (219 North Coast Highway), this is a space for all creatively-inclined people—artists, musicians, writers, and more—to showcase their work and to practice spontaneous creation together. It’s not quite an open mic, jam session, drum circle, or art night—but it has elements of all of these. All are welcome to participate as much or as little as they choose. If you’d prefer to just come and enjoy the vibe and performances, you are welcome to do that too. "Comics, Bande Dessinée, Fumetti, and Manga: Comics in Many Forms"—A conversation about comics in their many forms. Vin Deighan (aka Frank Quitely), Laurence Grove (director of the Stirling Maxwell Centre for the Study of Text/Image Cultures at the University of Glasgow and president of the International Bande Dessinée Society), Antonio Ianotta (University of San Diego), and Van Tarpley (San Diego State University) join moderator Elizabeth Pollard (co-director, Center for Comics Studies at SDSU) for a discussion exploring the similarities and differences of English-language comics, French bande dessinée, Italian fumetti, and Japanese manga. Drawing workshop immediately preceding the panel, from 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m., with Vin Deighan (aka Frank Quitely) in the Prebys Foundation Art Studio. Creative Cultures Arts Festival is back for its third installment. Creativity Suitcase will boast six arts booths and three vibrant dances from around the world. Then Lauren (@soul.water_) a local artist, will guide you step-by-step through a fun and intuitive paint experience, no art skills needed, just come ready to play and express yourself! After painting, we’ll unwind with a deeply restorative session led by Staci (@savvy_staci) using crystal sound bowls and Yoga Nidra, allowing your mind and body to fully relax and melt into the moment. All supplies are included, from paint and canvas to yoga beds, blankets and props for the sound bath. Just bring yourself and come as you are.
