  • Omar Sosa Quarteto Americanos | Athenaeum Jazz The spring series opens on Thursday, March 27, at Scripps Research with a long-anticipated local debut as a leader of acclaimed Cuban composer-pianist-bandleader Omar Sosa and his Quarteto Americanos, featuring Josh Jones on drums, Ernesto Mazar Kindelán on bass, and Sheldon Brown on sax, clarinet, and flute. Sosa is widely celebrated as one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today. His musical trajectory traces the African diaspora from Cuba to Brazil; from Central America to Ecuador’s African-descent communities; from San Francisco and New York to his current home base in Barcelona. True to his Afro-Cuban origins, Sosa fashions a spirited vision of uncompromising artistic generosity that embraces humanity at large. Nominated for seven Grammy awards and twice for the BBC World Music Awards, Sosa received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C., for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States. The New York Times wrote, “Sosa's music is the unifying sort, yoking together Africa and jazz and Latin America and hip-hop. He makes it work, being one of those rare birds whose keyboard skills are near those of Chick Corea and Chucho Valdes.” Billboard commented, “Sosa is one of the truly illuminated minds of world jazz. He is shaping a new synthesis of Latin and American jazz.” The concert will be in person at the Scripps Research Auditorium (10620 John Jay Hopkins Drive, San Diego, CA 92121, north of Genesee Avenue in Torrey Pines Mesa). There are no physical tickets for these events. Your name will be on an attendee list at the front door. Doors open at 7 p.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. Priority seating will be given to Donor level members and above. Ticket Confirmation Notice: Your reservation is not complete until you receive an email confirmation. • The Kingston Trio is an American folk and pop music band that emerged from San Francisco's North Beach club scene in 1957. With their unique sound and rich tradition of American folk music, the Trio quickly rose to fame during the late 50s and early 60s, influencing the musical tastes of a generation. Their unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame cemented their status as one of the most influential bands in music history. Today, The Kingston Trio continues to inspire and entertain audiences with their timeless music and captivating performances. All three current members, Mike Marvin, Tim Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds, who was also his musical mentor; Tim, a close friend since boyhood, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Buddy, who has performed with longtime Kingston Trio member George Grove. • Next up, on Saturday, July 20, is a special reunion of the Peter Erskine Trio with special guest Bob Mintzer, featuring Erskine on drums, Alan Pasqua on piano, Darek Oles on bass, and Bob Mintzer on tenor sax. The Athenaeum has a special relationship with Erskine, Pasqua, and Oles, going back to Oles’s 1998 appearance with Charles Lloyd, Erskine’s 1999 performance with trumpet master Kenny Wheeler, and many other stellar performances. DownBeat called the members of the trio, “jazz masters communicating in a highly evolved common language,” adding, “the group chemistry was equal parts sensitivity and combustibility, a balance of wide-open looseness and masterful precision. It all hinges on the group’s penchant to swing relentlessly while exploring a vast realm of expressive possibilities informed by each player’s considerable depth of experience. Erskine is a consistently refreshing catalyst; Oles is pitch-perfect and rock-steady; and Pasqua’s less-is-more approach to the keys provides contemporary harmonic and melodic context while leaving space for magic to unfold around him.” The Athenaeum hosted CD release concerts for the trio’s Grammy-nominated CD, Standards, and for Standards 2, which features all four of this concert’s artists. Known widely for his 30-year stint with the Grammy-nominated band Yellowjackets and as the leader of the WDR Big Band, Mintzer has been praised by DownBeat for his “prodigious talent and ingenuity.” Peter Erskine recently participated in Dave Drexler’s “Inside Art” segment previewing his upcoming Athenaeum Music and Arts Library concert. The interview airs this Sunday, July 7 at 6 p.m. PT on KSDS-FM, Jazz 88.3 (streaming live at www.jazz88.org and phone apps).
