After years of ignoring indigenous peoples, the U.S. environmental movement has embraced them as partners in protecting the integrity of ecosystems and as teachers in modeling a truly sustainable lifestyle. What are some of the traditions of earth care that the Kumeyaay lived out for thousands of years here in San Diego County and how did those practices grow out of their religion? For this FREE event sponsored by the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice, former ICEJ Chairperson Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson will interview several members of the Kumeyaay nation including eco-justice activists Bobby Wallace and Sarahmarie Llyemewaa Redfern. Mr. Wallace and Ms. Redfern will also reflect on their life journeys as activists, direct us toward local eco-justice issues, and address what true justice from the U.S. might look like for the Indigenous. About Gypsy Sally Based out of sunny San Diego, Gypsy Sally is a three piece blues band that brings the old school feel to the new age from blues, to rock with the occasional Bossa and Latin twist. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green. However, in addition to the blues, the band also draws influence from the vocals of Sam Cooke, and the rock guitar of Rory Gallagher. Celebrate Valentine's Day weekend by making art with or for someone you love! In this workshop led by artist Natalie M. Godinez, participants will learn the basics of stamp carving, how to create a DIY pattern, and how to use found materials to create your own stamps.
