  • Join us for the opening reception for Turning Tides, Saturday, August 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ! The exhibition will present works by all 12 TWA group members, showcasing their individual visions of what “Turning Tides” means to them. As we head into a changed world, post-pandemic and with social and political shifts, these are expressions of hope during transition, of ways to move forward, of the force of the spirit and the resilience of nature. The works are in a range of media: from textiles to painting, ceramic and bronze sculpture to mixed media, and in many styles, from abstract to whimsical to realism. The group has been working and showing together for 6 years, and were recently featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in an exhibition titled “Now.” Member artists also show individually, in galleries and museums on both coasts, and their work is held in corporate and private collections worldwide. This is an opportunity to engage with these amazing 12 Women Artists, and their works. We are so excited for this event. Light bites and refreshments will be served! • From San Diego weekend arts preview (KPBS feature): Artist Katherine Brannock described her "Someday Mouse" project on Instagram as "uplifting cuteness," and it's hard to top that. As a solo exhibition at Thumbprint Gallery in La Jolla, Brannock will showcase dozens of drawings of her "Someday Mouse" character, all stills from a short film featuring the mouse character made famous in her "The Adventures of Someday Mouse" books. Brannock draws the mouse with a mesmerizingly fine dot-shading method, and the mouse finds itself in adventures both wild and mundane, exuding hope, quietness and optimism, which is something incredibly soothing and pleasant. You can try to understand the who/what/when/where/why of the mouse here. Save the date: Brannock will also show an exhibition of an entirely different series later this month at Trash Lamb Gallery, opening July 23. Details: Opens 5-10 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2022 and is on view through Aug. 6. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Thumbprint Gallery, 920 Kline St., La Jolla. • In collaboration with So Say We All, the Hausmann Quartet presents "Seven Last Words", a performance of Joseph Haydn’s epic masterpiece alongside spoken word presentations of original works by the authors themselves. The texts will be inspired by the same scripture upon which Haydn based each of the movements of his monumental work, The "Seven Last Words" of Christ. Originally commissioned for a Good Friday service in 1783, it was adapted for string quartet by the composer and has since become a treasured Easter-time tradition around the world.
