Sparks Gallery is pleased to host the 2022 Oceanside Museum Artist Alliance exhibition. Titled “Dreams and Daylight”, the exhibition explores the real, imaginary, and abstract impressions of our waking and sleeping lives. The Artist Alliance is an affiliate group of membership dedicated to the support of Oceanside Museum of Art. Artist Alliance provides opportunities for interaction, visibility, and growth for artists in the region. Participating artists are current OMA members with the Artist Alliance affiliate membership. The artwork is juried by Sonya Sparks of Sparks Gallery. The “Dreams and Daylight” works will be on view at Sparks Gallery from April 30 – July 3, 2022. Decorated Green Beret sniper and UFC headliner Tim Kennedy will be at the Coronado Public Library on Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m. to discuss and sign his new book Scars and Stripes. This inspirational memoir offers lessons on how to unlock the best version of yourself, from someone who knows that failure is just one step towards success. Through vivid, wild anecdotes – such as saying he only feels alive right before he’s about to die - Kennedy reveals all the dumb, violent, embarrassing, and undeniably heroic things he’s done in his life, including multiple combat missions in Afghanistan, building a school in Texas for elementary kids, and creating two multimillion-dollar businesses. He has learned that failure isn’t the end – rather, it’s the first step towards unearthing the best version of yourself and finding success, no matter how overwhelming the setbacks may feel. Originally from Atascadero, California, Kennedy joined the Army in 2004. After completing Ranger School he was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group and was deployed on multiple combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq as a sniper, sniper instructor, and principal combatives instructor. While in the Army, he also developed his mixed martial arts fighting skills, which he had originally developed at ‘The Pit’ in Atascadero. He returned to mixed martial arts in 2009 at Strikeforce Challengers and in January 2013 was brought over to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). While now retired from fighting, his professional fighting record has him with just six losses in twenty-four matches. Today, Kennedy is the founder and head of Apogee Cedar Park: an Acton Academy school in Austin, Texas. He is also co-owner of Ranger Up and the CEO of Sheepdog Response. DISCO RIOT is a local innovative dance company, focused on collaborative, movement-based art. Throughout the past two years of the pandemic, Disco Riot has created some beautiful dance films and projects, like the "Move American" series of short films about voting issues, or "A Year of Distance." I also recently watched the company add choreography to contemporary artist Ana de Alvear's hyperrealistic drawings at the San Diego Museum of Art. Disco Riot returns to SDMA for a new SDMA+ project, reflecting on Cauleen Smith's contemporary video work — which is itself a work inspired by an early 1600s masterpiece in the museum's collection, Juan Sánchez Cotán’s "Still Life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon, and Cucumber." While St. Celfer explores the microcosm and macrocosm (as above so below and as within so without) pondering what things might be eluding us in ways we have not considered, Luke Gumaelius' keen academic mind considers patterns in biological and cultural existence. In contrast, Robin and John Gumaelius utilize expert ceramicist skill to create fantastical creatures both biological and imaginary. The four artists meet in the realm of concept. What can't we hear?
