Opening reception: Saturday March 12 5-7 p.m. From San Diego weekend arts events (KPBS feature): Art magazine Craft Desert — the brainchild of Kerianne Quick and Adam John Manley — has curated their first art exhibition, at City College's City Gallery. I love craft almost as much as I love the "subversive nature of craft," and this exhibition hones in on how both literal and figurative small actions can make an impact. Literal in that these works had to be small enough to fit in a USPS flat rate mailer, and figurative in that the societal concept of crafts is, in general, dismissive or reductive. During the 19th century, the first truly American art movement began. This school embodied by a collective of landscape painters had an aesthetic vision driven by Romanticism. Importantly, Hudson River School paintings mirrored three themes of America in the 19th century: discovery, exploration, and settlement. Initially, these artists focused on depicting the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding areas, including the Adirondack, Catskill, and White Mountains. Later the second generation of painters expanded their vision to include other regions such as New England, the Maritimes, the American West, and South America. Thomas Cole is generally recognized as the founder of the Hudson River School. We are indeed fortunate to have a superb collection of second generation Hudson River School paintings in the Timken's American Gallery. This docent-led talk will highlight the Timken's masterpieces from this time period and discuss their prominence in the history of American art. Event Details: Join the Library for the 2022 Summer Festival Jazz Concerts. Sponsored by the Friends of the Coronado Library and Hotel Del Coronado, concerts will take place every other Friday from June 3-August 26. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each performance. On Friday, July 29, the Uptown Rhythm Makers will showcase their unique style of authentic New Orleans style traditional jazz. A staple of the San Diego music scene since 2003, they've performed at the California Center for the Arts and the San Diego Jazz Fest . This concert will show off their range and feature favorites from traditional jazz hits and songs written especially for jazz bands in the 1920’s and 1930’s. If you listen closely, you’ll recognize tunes from King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Isham Jones, Duke Ellington, Spencer Williams, and more. Performer Bios: Bruce Vermazen: cornet & vocals: Bruce is a retired Cal - Berkeley professor and jazz cornetist since his teens. He is also a published jazz historian and has led jazz and ragtime orchestras in San Diego and the Bay Area. Bob Andersen: trombone & leader: Bob works part-time as a home health Occupational Therapist and leads the Uptown Rhythm Makers. He was a member of the seminal post-Katrina New Orleans trad jazz revival band, the Loose Marbles. Jim Fiedler: clarinet: Jim is a retired Navy veteran and a professional jazz clarinetist since high school in the late 60s. Armand Frigon: guitar: Armand is a former college music professor and professional jazz guitarist since the 70s. Jeremy Eikam: string bass: Jeremy is a high school music teacher and band director, and an in demand bassist around San Diego. Ray Conseur: drums: Ray teaches part-time with the San Diego USD and has been a professional drummer since the 70s.

Xanadu follows Clio, the lovely and precocious Greek muse who puts on roller skates. legwarmers, and an Australian accent in order to help Sonny Malone, a chalk artist with half a brain and a heart of gold, rediscover his own creativity. With both help and hindrance from the other muses Sonny and Clio work to rebuild a roller disco. Xanadu is the rare musical with a big heart, an even bigger funny bone, and a tongue stuck firmly in its cheek. Xanadu, a splashy musical comedy on wheels, has a book by Douglas Carter Beane and music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. It is based on the 1980 film of the same name. The film’s soundtrack was a commercial hit. The musical’s score retains the hits from the film and also includes new arrangements by Eric Stern of “I’m Alive”, “Magic”, “Suddenly”, and “Dancin'”, as well as integrating two classic Electric Light Orchestra songs, “Strange Magic” and “Evil Woman”, plus Farrar’s hit “Have You Never Been Mellow”.
