Festival de octubre en Baja California: Screening of the documentary "Fandango at the Wall" Festival de octubre concludes its October festivities with the screening of "Fandango at the Wall" (2020), a documentary that takes you along Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra founder/conductor Arturo O'Farrill’s journey through the remotest regions of Veracruz, México in search of musicians. This is where he is met with the masters of 300 year-old folkloric music: san jarocho. The film documents how he and his orchestra join these masters for a son jarocho music and dance festival called ‘Fandango Fronterizo,’ founded by Jorge Francisco Castillo. The two groups combine their musical talent, using elements of division at the U.S./ México border to create unity during Fandango at the Wall, a festival that takes place annually and happens simultaneously on both sides of the border. The event resulted in two recorded albums, one of which received a Grammy-award, a book was also written, and they filmed this HBO max documentary. Fandango is a party where everyone joins the show. This is the spirit that brought this project together and the reason for which we extend our invitation for you to join us as we screen this documentary and have the opportunity to hear from its creators and seal the presentation with a “palomazo,” commonly used to reference a spontaneous musical performance, by some of the film’s musicians. ¡No te pierdas este increíble evento en persona! This weekend in the arts: A new LGBTQ+ musical inspired by "Thelma and Louise"; Peel Lit reading; Barrio Art Crawl; Richard Keely; veteran opera; plus live music picks and more arts and culture events.

Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. In the sessions on September 1 and 15, participants will dissect the many facets of portraiture and the contrast between internal and external representations of the self while touring artworks from MCASD's collection. Whether viewing artworks that are figurative or abstract, metaphorical or literal, humorous or severe, each exploration will examine the compositional and storytelling qualities of portraits and their power to communicate a message. In the artmaking portion of the sessions, participants will put lessons into practice by creating portraits of many subjects, such as: • A beloved • Someone admired • A group of friends • Family member • Co-workers • The self In the workshop series from October 6 through December 1, participants will explore how the body is integrated into contemporary art. Through close looking we will engage with artworks where the body is present, and others where it is invoked by its notable absence. As participants delve into the concepts tied to interpretations of the human form they will consider and learn: • How scale impacts the viewer • How the body is used as a tool for labor • How artists engage the senses in a hands-off contemporary arts environment • How body is present through absence Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary artmaking techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Transportation will be provided, if required. Participants may join one session (two days) or the full series (four sessions; eight days).
