  • The San Diego Arab Film Festival presents the classic Iranian film "The Survivor" directed by Seifollah Dad. The film is set in Haifa and illustrates the experiences of Palestinians under Israeli occupation. It is based on the Ghassan Kanafani novel "Returning to Haifa." Starring Jamal Soliman, Alaa El Din Koksh and Salma Al-Masri, this historical drama tells the story of a Palestinian grandmother who returns to Haifa to find out what happened to her grandson who was separated from his parents when they were forced to leave their home when Israel took control of Haifa. The screening will take place at 7 p.m., October 18, at the Museum of Photographic Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. A traditional Palestinian dinner (served cafeteria style) will be available for purchase. Options include Musakan (baked chicken with salted onions, olive oil and sumac) and Mujadara (vegetarian dish of lentils and rice with caramelized onions and plain yogurt).   • The most brick-tacular time of the year has arrived at LEGOLAND® California Resort. The Carlsbad theme park kicks off its holiday celebration with the return of its three-story, 35-foot-tall LEGO® Christmas Tree, built from more than 366,000 LEGO and DUPLO® bricks, at the 23rd annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 1 at 5:45 p.m. This year’s ceremony will feature special guest and actress Danielle Fishel, best known for her role as Topanga on “Boy Meets World,” as the honorary tree lighter. Guests can gather around the iconic LEGO tree to witness the magical moment when all 500 LED lights and 40 LEGO candles come to life. The celebration continues with the season’s first holiday fireworks show, adding an extra burst of cheer to the evening.   • The students in this workshop will delve into the more formal forms of poetry styles; their histories and contemporary usage. We will continue to discuss the design and organization of complete books of poetry, both the chapbook and the full book. Each participant will choose two books of poetry and complete the analysis of both the poems and the structure/organization of the books, submit, by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the books and be ready to give a short presentation about the findings to the class of one of the books. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop. Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, you will have: - Become familiar with the syllabic forms, prose poems, sonnet, pantoum, short poem, villanelle and sestina - Dissected the different approaches to poetry book organization - Read and analyzed two books of poetry - Presented to the class the results of research on one book of poetry Zoom Note: Please note that you will receive your Zoom link via email 24 hours before the start of this class.
