One of the most respected MCs in any language, Ana Tijoux has been winning over fans around the world since her debut 1977 bubbled up from an underground sensation into mainstream recognition after being featured on the hit TV show “Breaking Bad” and favorited by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. “South America’s answer to Lauryn Hill: equally skillful at singing and rapping,” (New York Times), Tijoux brings her new album Vengo on tour to the US—her first full US tour since 2018—which showcases the nimble MC over lush, golden-era hip-hop production rooted in traditional Latin instrumentation. Born in France to Chilean parents in political exile during Pinochet’s dictatorship, Tijoux moved back to Chile as a teenager and found a home in the emerging hip-hop scene of Santiago. In concert, Tijoux takes the stage with a full band that brings to life the intricate arrangements of the new album, a whirlwind trip through hip-hop, jazz, and funk, spiced with a bit of politics and her great sense of humor that has led audiences around the globe fall in love with her. With the group members longtime writing history together, lead singer Matthew Ramsey, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Trevor Rosen, guitarist and vocalist Brad Tursi, bassist Geoff Sprung and drummer Whit Sellers, have taken their singer/songwriter roots into the present as they continue to write, perform and get recognized for hit after hit with their own band, Old Dominion. Jean-Paul (JP) Balmat is the award-winning educator and performer leading the internationally recognized music program at Mission Bay. His award-winning groups have been invited to perform throughout California, New Orleans and most recently Japan. Jean-Paul is an accomplished educator, performer, composer and arranger. As a professional saxophonist, he performs regularly in San Diego. He is artistic director of the Euphoria Brass Band and his recordings and compositions have been nominated for San Diego Music Awards the past six years. In 2019 and 2020 Euphoria Brass Band won the San Diego Music Award for “Best Jazz.” Most recently he has performed with New Orleans trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith (Tonight Show Band) and GRAMMY award winning and nominated musicians Oscar Hernandez, Francisco Torres (Poncho Sanchez, Gordon Goodwin) and Javier Cabanillas (Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Cabanijazz Project). “Harmony has been at the center of our musical experience and expression from the very beginning,” says mandolinist/singer Lincoln Mick. “Often, when we’re unsure of what to do next, we’ll say, ‘Let’s just all sing together.’ We’ve changed a lot as a band over the years, but harmony has always been the backbone of what we do, which has led us to create all these background vocals that not only support the lead, but have a life and character of their own.” This sense of harmony and hospitality has been central to The Arcadian Wild’s story from its earliest days. Named for a utopian landscape in Greek mythology, the group got its start roughly a decade ago, when Isaac Horn and Lincoln Mick met as choir students at Nashville’s Lipscomb University. While both had grown up on alt-rock and punk, they quickly bonded over a shared love for American roots music and the endless possibilities that lay beyond the boundaries of tradition and expectation.
