  • About Amanda Portela Amanda started her musical career in San Francisco, she frequented many an open mic and one in particular at the 16th and Mission Bart Station. It was there that she was inspired to begin her path as a singer songwriter. A few years later Amanda found herself at Mesa College studying jazz and singing for the Mesa Big Band then later on joining a Congolese band in 2010 called Bateke Beat. Amanda’s musical endeavors lead her to performing at various clubs and festivals in San Diego. Portela, used her new found passion for singing Jazz and started a popular “Jazz Jam” at a Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Shortly their after, Amanda joined the Indie rock band by the name of Viva Apollo. Viva Apollo was notorious within the local San Diego music circuit, performing in all kinds of venues including a late night local cable access show, Tonight in San Diego.   • The Mission Hills Garden Walk is presenting its 2024 Garden Walk theme of “Another Day in Paradise” on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s theme will be illustrated in 12 gardens, including the Grant TK-8 School organic Gecko Garden. Local musicians and artists will be in the gardens to add to the festivities. The Mission Hills Garden Walk was inaugurated by the Mission Hills Garden Club in 1999 and has become a celebrated annual community event. Each year a number of Mission Hills homeowners agree to open their magnificent gardens to the community. Tickets are $40 each, kids under 10 free, and will be sold online in half-hour increments beginning April 1 at MissionHillsGardenClub.org. The funds raised will be used to continue the club’s Community College scholarship program, support Mission Hills Summer Concerts in the Park and help fund neighborhood beautification projects. Ticket purchasers who elect to become members of the Garden Club will receive a $15 discount from their membership fee. The Garden Walk will begin at the Mission Hills Nursery, 1525 Fort Stockton Ave., where attendees will pick up their wrist bands and booklets.   • Anomaly! Songwriter! Keyboard genius! Born the mysterious son of two professional artists Anthony Smith knows no creative limits. He has mastered the craft of piano key solos and melodies. From jazz to crunk, Mr. Smith is the universal funk. His Herbie Hancock chops and Roy Ayers flair make him a late night favorite everywhere. Anthony holds a degree in Music from San Diego State University and is equally as comfortable in the boardroom as he is performing and producing music. Mr. Smith is currently the head of A&R for New Century Soul Records. Anthony Smith has been performing, arranging, composing and producing music professionally for 25 years. As a pianist, keyboardist and vibraphonist, he has worked with many well-known artists in the world of jazz, and also pop, rock and a variety of other genres. In addition to working as a sideman in a large number of both local and touring groups, Anthony has led many of his own bands, performing extensively throughout the U.S., and also abroad on occasion. Anthony is also a prolific composer and writer, having written and produced numerous albums, screenplays, stage plays, and a 700-page memoir titled The Lizard Stays in the Cage, published in 2013. His latest work is a series of conversation with today’s living jazz vibraphonists, titled Masters of the Vibes, and published by Marimba Productions, Inc. He served for years on the jazz faculty at San Diego State University, where he earned a Masters Degree in 2010, and was the regular keyboardist for The Mighty Untouchables, one of San Diego’s premier variety pop/rock acts.   • Cultural Forces, the cultural arm of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, brings seven world class artists, professional musicians before the war, now active-duty soldiers, for a music tour in the United States to thank the American people. The group is composed of two bandura players, an opera singer, a violinist, a pianist, a country singer, and a poet. Artists’ repertoire presents renditions of a wide variety of music, from Ukrainian and world classics to covers of popular hits and country tunes, featuring the traditional Ukrainian string instrument, the bandura.
