Kumeyaay historian Ethan Banegas Luiseño-Kumeyaay (SDSU-American Indian Studies) discusses the process to develop a community-engaged comic that speaks from the perspective of the Kumeyaay people. This comic is a way to tell stories of Kumeyaay people from past to present and engage with their own communities, schools, and beyond. Hear more about how tribal historians are driving the work of this visual storytelling project as a creative team brings it to life. About Ethan Ethan grew up on the Barona Reservation in San Diego County. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History, Religious Studies, and Political Science in 2009 and his Master of Arts degree in History in 2017 from the University of San Diego (USD). Banegas is owner of Kumeyaay.com and Historian for the San Diego History Center, which operates the Junípero Serra Museum. He was first published in 2017 (Indian Gaming in the Kumeyaay Nation). In 2020, he published the Kumeyaay Oral History Project, a community-based research project, after collecting thirty-three personal interviews, video-taped oral histories, and photographs from San Diego’s First People. In 2024, he published two comics—“Beyond Gaming” and “Our Past, Present, and Future”—and served as project director and author of the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project. Material Land Escapades (Ages 7 – 9) July 14 – 18, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Want to come on an adventure on land, sea, and into space? Make new friends as you go on an adventure of colorful landscapes and radiant underwater worlds at MCASD! Learn how contemporary artists combine mediums and materials and make art inspired by the natural world around us: Create your very own underwater world inspired by Andrea Chung. Team up with other camps to film and build an installation just like Fox Maxy. Bend light to create mysterious wonders to celebrate Robert Irwin. Schedule Day 1: Create moon maps and planet keychains as you learn about the moon and space inspired on the works from the permanent collection. Day 2: Finds yourself back on earth surrounded by nature, as you make dancing tree murals and find your way out of escape rooms. Resonance is a free, all-ages event hosted by St. Brigid’s Episcopal Church and Oceanside Theatre Company, that builds community through creative expression. Held in OTC's Studio 219 (219 North Coast Highway), this is a space for all creatively-inclined people — artists, musicians, writers, and more — to showcase their work and to practice spontaneous creation together. It’s not quite an open mic, jam session, drum circle, or art night — but it has elements of all of these. All are welcome to participate as much or as little as they choose.
