  • Home Start, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to child abuse prevention and providing evidence-based family strengthening services, will hold its annual Blue Ribbon Gala on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at The US Grant Hotel (326 Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101). Each year, the Blue Ribbon Gala is held in April in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. With 300 community leaders, elected officials, caring partners, and philanthropists expected to attend, this signature event raises vital funding for Home Start to serve our community’s most vulnerable children, families, and individuals. This year’s gala pays tribute to spring flowers as a testament to the growth and blossoming that comes from Home Start’s programs. Each day, Home Start staff plant seeds of hope to inspire growth for children and their families. The organization’s critical services serve and empower children, youth, and families affected by tragedies including homelessness, domestic violence, hunger, abuse and trauma. Last year, the organization served over 22,000 individuals in San Diego County. Guests will enjoy a champagne reception, delicious three-course dinner, live entertainment, and dancing to the music from local band Full Strength. There will also be chances to bid on premiere packages and specialty items during the silent and live auctions. Most importantly, the evening will feature powerful stories from clients about how their lives have been changed by Home Start’s vital programs. Ticket prices are $300 and $400 for VIP. Tables of ten are available for $3,000 and Preferred Tables of ten are $4,000. To purchase tickets, please visit www.blueribbongala.com The Presenting Sponsor for this year’s event is the Rodeki Foundation. • “A Big Band for the World.”—Wall Street Journal Red Baraat is a pioneering band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by dhol player Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound, a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, jazz and raw punk energy. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. Reemerging in 2021 with a renewed focus, energy and sound, Red Baraat headlined the Wolf Trap Performing Arts Center with master percussionist, Zakir Hussain, performed at the Dubai World Expo, and toured its 10th annual Red Baraat Festival of Colors. • From gallerist Michael James Armstrong: I’m excited to be showing a new site specific projection by Phil Beaumont. I can’t remember when I first met Phil. It seems he, along with his wife Yuko, have been staples in the San Diego art scene for as long as I’ve lived here. They are routinely some of the most dedicated supporters of local artists and have acquired a well curated collection. Phil is also a talented musician and singer for the band The Color Forty Nine and until recently was the principal at The Museum School for many years. About the exhibition: Phils new body of work is a series of iPhone videos shot in portrait orientation. Varied in subject matter, each video has an overarching theme of quiet solitude and subtle movement that sometimes borders on near stillness. If patient, the viewer is rewarded with an ethereal state of calm. The piece Furano Hotel is a site specific projection that is perfectly situated within Ice Gallery. We hope to see you at the opening on Saturday February 10th from 5-8pm. If you can’t make the opening, the gallery will be open to the public Tuesday – Friday 11-4. Related links: ICE Gallery website
