World-Renowned Belly Dance Pioneer Suhaila Salimpour Returns to San Diego for a Weekend of Dance, Culture, and Celebration San Diego, CA — Suhaila Salimpour, visionary artist and one of the most influential figures in the world of belly dance, will headline a weekend of dance and performance in San Diego, featuring a 6-hour belly dance intensive and the dazzling Suhaila Super Star Gala. A trailblazer in Middle Eastern dance, Suhaila brings her signature fusion of deep cultural knowledge, precise technique, and dynamic performance to this unique event designed to inspire dancers of all levels and uplift the local arts community. ________________________________________ Featuring: Live performance by Fadi Islambouli and Suhaila Salimpour With special guest performers from across Southern California! ________________________________________ About Suhaila Salimpour Suhaila Salimpour is a first-generation Kurdish-American of Sicilian-Greek descent and a second-generation belly dancer, continuing the legacy of her mother, Jamila Salimpour. She is the creator of the first structured certification program and pedagogical system in belly dance, transforming how the dance is studied, taught, and preserved globally. Suhaila has toured internationally, performed in top venues across the Middle East and beyond, choreographed three full-length theatrical productions, and recorded over 23 albums with renowned Arabic musicians. Her contributions have earned prestigious accolades, including the 2024 Gerbode Foundation Special Award for Dance and Movement, and the 2023/24 Isadora Duncan Special Award for Outstanding Production. She currently serves on the boards of Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, World Arts West, and the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance, while co-producing the YALLAH Arts Festival in the Bay Area. Learn to wet felt a gorgeous bowl! Saturday, October 18, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. In this 3-hour workshop you will learn the ancient art of wet felting – the process of loose wool becoming a fabric – and create & design one felted bowl (about 4-5”). The instructor will lead you, with easy steps, through the whole making of your bowl. First you will layer soft merino wool and use pieces of yarn to add color and texture details. Various yarn will be provided but if you have some special one at home, please feel free to bring it! Then your hands will be getting wet and soapy during the “sculpting” or felting process. Towels will be provided. DIY kits will be available for purchase at the end of class. They are perfect as a gift or for you to make more bowls at home. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! All materials are provided. Wednesdays, October 15, 22, 29, November 5 & 19, from 5:30 – 8 p.m., with the last class of the series from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Learn the fascinating and ancient art form of ceramics with Meg, a full time potter, in this 5-week, weekday evening wheel series. Whether you’re a beginner or intending to deepen your relationship, all are welcome to experience the world of clay in this fun and friendly environment. By focusing on techniques to confidently create functional and aesthetic pottery, we will learn creative design, how to throw on the wheel, trimming and glazing! Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome.
