  • Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “Cali-Baja,” featuring author Michael Gardiner, at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 16, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library. There’s a line between Northern Baja and Southern California. From the northern side, it’s called “the border.” From the southern side, some call it “la linea,” or “la frontera.” But fish don’t care about that line. Neither does the climate. And the soil types do not suddenly change. Nature knows no such borders and, it seems, neither does food. Join us as we explore the connections between our neighbors about our culture and cuisine. After more than 3 decades of law practice, Michael Gardiner retired to become a full-time award winning food writer. In addition to his two published cookbooks: Cali-Baja Cuisine: Ensenada Aguachiles, Tijuana Taco Stands and San Diego Cali Burritos; and Modern Kosher: Global Flavors, New Traditions, both published by Rizzoli, Michael is a regular food feature writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune and has freelanced for Local Magazine, Edible San Diego, Tasting Table, Thrillist, and the Cook’s Cook. He was also the restaurant reviewer for the late San Diego City Beat. Michael won San Diego Press Club awards every year since 2018 for his contributions. He also won a National Championship at Australian Rules Football! The presentation is free and open to the public. A tasting and book signing will follow. Stay Connected on Social Media! • Director: Bill Ross IV, Turner Ross Run Time: 108 min. Release Year: 2024 Starring: Makai Garza, Micah Bunch, Nathaly Garcia, Nichole Dukes, Tony Aburto Synopsis: Celebrated directorial duo the Ross Brothers (Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets and Contemporary Color) turn their pioneering hybrid lens to the cinematic road trip with "GASOLINE RAINBOW." Undoubtedly candid yet deeply loving, this is an expansive portrait of the new generation as told in their own words. With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from inland Oregon embark on one last adventure. Piling into a van with a busted tail light, their mission takes them to a place they’ve never been — the Pacific coast, five hundred miles away. The plan, in full: “Fuck it.” Through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets, they connect with outsiders on the fringes and discover their lives will be determined by the trails they blaze themselves. These are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future — and The Party at the End of the World. A SXSW and Venice Film Festival selection, the mesmerizing "GASOLINE RAINBOW" depicts a wild and true coming-of-age. With a beating heart and an exuberant spirit, this rhapsodic look at today’s American West reminds us of the timeless joys of community. • Director: Joanna Arnow Run Time: 87 min. Release Year: 2024 Starring: Babak Tafti, Joanna Arnow, Michael Cyril Creighton, Peter Vack, Scott Cohen Synopsis: In her unsparing, acerbically funny feature debut, Joanna Arnow stars as an emotionally detached young Brooklynite drifting through unremarkable days and nights. Neither her on-again-off-again BDSM relationship with a mildly disinterested older man, nor her nondescript corporate job, appear to bring her any satisfaction, and her relationship with her unpleasable New Yorker parents only compounds the tiresome cycle of her routine. Arnow, who also wrote, directed, and edited this sharp and observant take on modern-day malaise, is known for her autobiographically tinged works of brutal honesty and deadpan self-deprecation. Here, she finds a core of poignant truth about the ways people search for those elusive, ever-shifting things like emotional happiness and sexual gratification, refusing to judge them while at the same time unafraid of presenting their flaws.
