  • The La Jolla Playhouse's long-running educational theater production project, the Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour snuck in just under the wire in 2020, with February performances on the Playhouse stage for several shows, though the actual tour across local schools that spring didn't happen due to the pandemic. This year's project, including the performance and all educational and behind the scenes components, are virtual, and highly produced at that. The 2021 commission is "Pick Me Last" by Idris Goodwin (whose breakbeat play "Hype Man" was recently produced by San Diego REP). "Pick Me Last" is a delightful script — funny and compelling, and it unfolds in a smart and curious way from the very first line. The POP Tour program is designed for grades 3-6, but this play has a dreamy timelessness and agelessness. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS (featured in San Diego Weekend Arts Events, May 27, 2021). From the Playhouse: A playground. Two teams. Two captains. It’s the same thing every day at Chavonne’s elementary school – her best friend Wes is always picked last. So she hatches a plan to end the schoolyard cycle. Still, after a few imaginary visits from visionaries Sigmund Freud and Elon Musk, plus a little help from the new kid, Chavonne learns that the problem she’s trying to fix may not be the one that needs solving. Don’t miss this funny and touching story – infused with music and poetry – about standing up for your friends and learning to let them stand up for themselves. Now available to stream through December 31! Book here to stream. "Pick Me Last" is by playwright Idris Goodwin. This La Jolla Playhouse 2021 Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour production is directed by Jacole Kitchen.
