The 2023 Masquerade on-stage costume competition (or Cosplay Competition for those who favor that term), a tradition at Comic-Con from almost its beginning, will be Saturday evening, July 22, starting at 8:30 p.m. The event celebrates not only the contribution of costuming to the popular arts, but also the amazing creations that our attendees make and bring to the convention. The costume presentations, intermission entertainment, and then awards presentation will run 2 and ½ hours and be set in the Convention Center’s 3,900-seat Ballroom 20, with overflow seating again available at the large screen in the Sails Pavilion. Not a dance or party as the name may imply, it is more akin to a talent show set on a large stage before an audience, showcasing amazing costumes crafted by our non-professional but still very creative and talented attendees. Most costumes will be impressive re-creations from movies, television, anime, comic books, fantasy, Broadway shows, video games, and history; others will be completely original designs from the imagination. Some will be solo entries; others will be groups with a shared theme. All genres are welcome, but NO purchased costumes are allowed. The San Diego Automotive Museum will be hosting a garage sale, on Saturday, April 8, 2023, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy beautiful Balboa Park and see gorgeous cars and exhibits at the San Diego Automotive Museum. This 2 day event showcases the diverse and rich cuisine of Laos right here in Mira Mesa Community Park, from 11:00-7:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Visitors can expect to find a variety of food stalls selling a range of traditional dishes, from savory to sweet desserts. Some unique and delicious dishes can’t even be ordered in local Lao restaurants. In addition to the food, the festival features live music, cultural performances, cooking demonstrations, and fun cooking competitions. Foodies, get your taste buds ready for an adventure! The mission of the event organizer, Lao Americans Organization of San Diego (LAOSD), is to share history and the diaspora of refugees from Laos. This festival celebrates the culinary treasures from Laos in honor of World Refugee Day. Alexander Salazar and Darcy Kempton partner to announce the grand opening of their Mission Hills fine art gallery SD Art Advisory scheduled for May 20, 2023. The opening coincides with the Art in the Hills Art Walk & Banner Contest in Mission Hills in partnership with Grant Elementary at noon. Families and students are invited to stop in to enjoy art and celebration. Later in the evening, SD Art Advisory will open to the public for the grand opening celebration starting at 6pm.
