The Old Globe is thrilled to announce that the popular event Thinking Shakespeare Live!, directed by the Globe’s Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 11 a.m. on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Priority seating goes on sale to Globe subscribers and donors on Friday, April 4 at Noon, with sales to the general public beginning on Friday, April 18 at Noon, and will be available online at TheOldGlobe.org. Drawn from Edelstein’s approachable and inviting book "Thinking Shakespeare: A How-To Guide for Student Actors, Directors, and Anyone Else Who Wants to Feel More Comfortable with the Bard," Thinking Shakespeare Live! will feature Edelstein, who will be joined by three professional classical actors. Immediately after the event, Edelstein will sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase at the theatre. This program is an ideal introduction to Shakespeare for families and young audiences, as well as an exciting new look at the playwright for Bardophiles. Copley Library at the University of San Diego is pleased to unveil its most recent acquisition, "In Blue Time," followed by a talk given by artist Tatiana Ortiz-Rubio as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. About the Artist: Tatiana Ortiz-Rubio is a Mexican artist whose work includes oil painting, drawing, muralism and installation. Her current work focuses on the concept of time, disability, and the transitions of change through the perspectives of her individual narrative, astro-physics, philosophy and memory. She received her MFA from the New York Academy of Art and her BA in Art History and Visual Arts at the University of San Diego. Ortiz-Rubio has exhibited her artwork internationally in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the United States, in such places as the Timken Museum of Art, Centro Cultural Tijuana, Oceanside Museum, Quint Gallery, Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, Instituto Cultural Cabañas in Guadalajara, and Bread&Salt Gallery among others. Her permanent public murals can be seen through out the city of San Diego and has work in the San Diego Civic Art Collection as well as the University of the Claustro de Sor Juana in Mexico City and now in the University of San Diego. Ortiz-Rubio partnered with the State of California for the Action Saves Lives campaign to create a mural to commemorate COVID victims and raise awareness. In addition, she was an Artist in Residence at the Timken Museum of Art, Chavon School of Design in the Dominican Republic, and at Bread&Salt Gallery in San Diego. She currently teaches drawing and painting at the University of San Diego.

Founded in 2001, Meta4 is one of Finland’s most celebrated string quartets. Their Polarkr(e)is Drifting North program explores works from the sound worlds of the Arctic Circle, from the Inuit themes of American composer Amy Beach’s String Quartet, to works of their fellow Finns Kaija Saarhiaho and Jean Sibelius, paired with Italo-Indian composer Krishna Nagaraja’s Stringar, a piece that combines old and new through Nordic folk dance tunes. In 2004, the ensemble won first prize and the special prize for the best interpretation of a Shostakovich work at the International Shostakovich String Quartets Competition in Moscow and, in 2007, first prize at the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna. The Finnish Ministry of Culture awarded the ensemble the Finland Prize in recognition of its international cultural influence and Meta4 was chosen for the “BBC New Generation Artist Scheme” (2008, 2010). Nubya Garcia isn’t an artist you can easily classify. Is it jazz? Sure, the London-born saxophonist, composer and bandleader grew up studying the genre under the noted pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. But it isn’t until you listen to albums like 2020’s Source and 2024’s Odyssey that you hear broader creativity shining through: It’s jazz, classical, dub, R&B and whatever else Garcia wants to convey. It all comes from a place of exploration and self-study, of wanting to do all the things across all disciplines while ignoring arbitrary boxes that don’t fit. Garcia’s sophomore album Odyssey, out in September 2024 via Concord Jazz, is a majestic feat on which she blends orchestral arrangements with R&B, jazz, broken beat and dub, resulting in a grand, nuanced record that feels airy and celestial without sacrificing the groove.
