The new exhibit, "Sea Monsters: Delving into the Deep Myth", staged aboard the world’s oldest active sailing ship, Star of India, is a call to explorers of all ages.   • WRITE LIKE Vonnegut II -“So It Goes” (2nd of 2) Held on the 100th anniversary of the author’s birth Slaughterhouse 5 and other 3rd Person novels of innocence encountering a cruel world form our model for the last of 3 freestanding dives into the writer’s process of Kurt Vonnegut in his centennial. Exercises designed to find humor and graciousness grounded in a trauma-informed heart. This session is also available via Digital Ink recording.   • The North Coast Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 75th anniversary with a special anniversary concert featuring American composers on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at the San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdelena, Encinitas with reception to follow. The performance includes composers Leroy Anderson, Samuel Barber, James P. Johnson, Alan Lerner and Frederick Loewe, and features William Grant Still’s Afro American Symphony and Aaron Copland’s stirring Lincoln Portrait narrated by actor Victor Morris. The orchestra was founded in 1947 by Encinitas greenhouse owner Alfred Williams Jr. and is conducted by Daniel Swem. Admission: $12 general, $10 seniors/students/military, $30/family max.   • Interview with Maria Hinojosa and Dean Nelson as part of the 2023 Writer's Symposium by the Sea, Writing That Celebrates. Maria Hinojosa has written three books: "Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America"; "Raising Raul: Adventures Raising Myself and My Son"; and "Crews: Gang Members Talk" with Maria Hinojosa. Hinojosa’s career includes reporting for PBS, CBS, WNBC, CNN, NPR, and anchoring the Emmy Award winning talk show from WGBH Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One. In 2022 she received a Pulitzer Prize for co-writing her podcast, Suave. As a reporter who was the first Latina in many newsrooms, Maria Hinojosa dreamt of a space where she could create independent, multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diverse American experience. To that end, in 2010, she created Futuro Media, an independent, nonprofit organization based in Harlem, NYC with the mission to create multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world. Hinojosa is the Anchor and Executive Producer of the Peabody Award-winning show Latino USA, distributed by PRX, as well as Co-Host of the award-winning political podcast, In The Thick. She is also a contributor to the long-running, CBS Sunday Morning and a frequent guest on MSNBC.   • The Farm’s final film – “Fantastic Fungi” – will take guests on an up-close and personal time-lapse journey to show the healing power and medicinal value of fungi. The documentary takes a close look at the restorative properties of fungi and shows you just how magical they truly are. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with live music, mingling and a chance to speak with local organizations and individuals from the community. The film screening will begin at 7:00 p.m. All people are welcome. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic blankets, lawn chairs, food and drinks to enjoy an evening on the Farm.

The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will feature critically acclaimed films on topics including child care and education, environmental protection, gender equity, trans and Indigenous rights, women’s rights and more. Hundreds of service members chime in, exposing the cycle of abuse occurring on military bases and demanding justice. Thursday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. PST (Q&A with director Juliana Curi and producer Martina Sönksen) "Uýra: The Rising Forest" (2022) Uýra, a transgender Indigenous artist, travels through the Amazon on a journey of self-discovery using performance art to teach Indigenous youth that they are the guardians of ancestral messages of the Amazon Forest. In a country that kills an incredibly high number of transgender, Indigenous and environmentalist youth of any country , Uýra leads a rising movement while fostering unity and providing inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ and environmental movements in the heart of the Amazon Forest.
