Tomory and the class will begin the day at the La Jolla Studio and then walk down to the Cove to paint. (If accessibility is an issue, students are welcome to drive down to the Cove). Tomory will focus on exploring tension within a painting—by pushing the boundaries between representation and abstraction—as well as three-dimensional (3D) space and the physicality of the materials used to paint. Materials: Portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, sizes 2, 4, and 6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail, sizes 2–4. Paper towels; odorless turpentine; small jar for turpentine, painting medium (Galkyd, Liquin, etc.); wood palette; oil paints: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Lemon, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Permalba White, Raw Umber, Cadmium orange.
