  • Make your own Bass or Electric Guitar with bass builder and musician, Allan Corona. This course is designed to walk students through the steps of constructing their own electric and bass guitars, including using templates to cut the body from a blank. Students are guided through the use of routers and drills to remove material for fitting the components. You’ll learn to safely use the machinery and tools required to complete your own instrument. Students learn how to solder the components, install pick guard, strings and all parts needed. We will show how to finish your guitar and install all components so it’s ready to play by the end of the workshop. Materials are provided. This class is open to all levels, but taking Intro to the Woodshop first is recommended. Please note: This workshop takes place indoors. Depending on finish choice, students may need to come back outside of the 5 weeks for one or 2 visits to add coats of finish. We’ll work with your schedule… we’re flexible! • It’s that time of the year again! Santa and his many elves at the SDFWA have been getting ready for our two-day “Annual Holiday Gift Showcase” on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17-18 in our spacious new 5200 square foot Member Shop. We are the same organization that presents the world-famous Design in Wood competition at the San Diego County Fair. In fact, we are one of the largest woodworking clubs in the United States! Come join us and see what we've been creating the past year. Our elves have made 2,300+ unique, hand-crafted items. We’ve been busy carving, building, and turning a wide variety of wood species into heirloom quality gifts. The annual benefit event is part of a larger story as increasing numbers of residents from our diverse community take up woodworking as a creative endeavor. We’ve seen more women joining, as well as young members, and people of all nationalities. On Friday, Nov. 17 and Saturday, Nov. 18, we will silence the machine tools, clear the sawdust, and transform our member shop into a Holiday-themed Bazaar, full of hand-made wooden treasures such as jewelry boxes, cutting boards, turned bowls, kid’s toys, kitchen accessories and much, much more. • Attention fellow futurists, intrepid inventors, time-travelers and soothsayers, the Mothership is taking flight once again! This sci-fi micro-fiction event is inspired by sci-fi magazine editor George Hay. In the 1970s, Hay asked authors—including Arthur C. Clarke, the namesake of UC San Diego’s Clarke Center—to submit short stories that would fit on a postcard. Likewise, Short Tales from the Mothership invites participants to submit short stories inspired by UC San Diego’s iconic Geisel Library, designed by the much-admired architect William Pereira. To participate, send a sci-fi, fantasy or horror story with 250 words or fewer to Scott Paulson (spaulson@ucsd.edu) by Nov.1, 2023. At the Nov. 8 event, you will have the opportunity to read your entry or have your work read aloud for you. If you enjoy creative writing or hearing original short stories, you won’t want to miss this sci-fi micro-fiction event.
