All Levels Wheel Throwing Class Schedule Saturdays, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Six-Week Session January 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, March 1 Teaching Artist Max Anderson Description With a main focus on functional pottery, beginner students will learn how to use the equipment in the studio and how to use the wheel while more advanced students will further use the wheel as a tool to create work made partially or entirely from thrown forms. All students will be encouraged to experiment with surface and altering techniques to transform their work from pots to functional works of art. Students will leave the class with finished work they can use at home that’s dishwasher safe! Repair your Plush! Saturday, December 21, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. Join us for a heartwarming 2-hour workshop where we will breathe new life into your beloved stuffed animals! Whether it’s a childhood companion or a cherished gift, learn hands-on techniques to mend, reinforce, re-stuff and restore plush toys. As we stitch and stuff, I will share stories of healing and celebration as we transform sentimental fabrics into custom keepsakes that honor spatial memories. This workshop teaches the art of repair — a place where every stitch tells a story, and where life’s moments, big and small, are celebrated with love. It is recommended that you wash your plush toy ahead of time planning for plenty of time for it to dry thoroughly. Use your best judgement on whether it should go in the washing machine or be gently hand washed. Tuesday, November 12, 2024 Please join us for an artist talk with Carlos Castro Arias. He will share a special presentation on his Athenaeum show, The Splinter in the Eye, and how it connects to his career and process. The reception will take at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Carlos Castro Arias will be exhibiting his newest project, The Splinter in the Eye, an installation composed of paintings and objects in which the artist reflects about memory, trauma, and elements of the individual and collective identity. Carlos Castro Arias is a Colombian artist, professor, and musician. He received a BA from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogota in 2002 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received an MFA in painting in 2010. Castro Arias has been an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2019. In 2022, the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia exhibited a retrospective of his work entitled La Vida de las Cosas Muertas (The Life of Dead Things). Most recently Castro Arias has exhibited at Artpace, San Antonio; Bread & Salt, San Diego; LA Galería, Bogota; Quint Gallery, La Jolla, and Espacio El Dorado, Bogota. He has participated in group shows in Sweden, Peru, France, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Venezuela. His musical projects include: POPO (2000), Los Claudios de Colombia (2005-2010) and Amor Negro (2020). The artist lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota. There will be new fun projects with each camp and each day. Projects and depth of skill exploration are matched up to the children’s age/ability. This camp is recommended for children 6-12 years. Transfer from Another Liberty Station Arts Camp Optional | No Charge If your child is in another camp in Liberty Station Arts District that ends as ours begins and you need your child transferred, let us know! We’re happy to have a staff member walk your child from one camp to this one. Lunch Hour Supervision Optional | $15/three lunches If you’d like your child to stay during the lunch hour, from 12-1pm each day, there’s a $15 fee for the hour to cover the lunchtime gap.
