Imagine a new artist with deep roots, one with the emotional power and swing of Billie Holiday, the deep-blue sorrows and joys of Bessie Smith, all the while leavened with Brooklyn spice. Her heart is in her music and there is no pretense, no distance as audiences from Moscow to Lincoln Center have found out. Mara’s voice has been compared to “Louis Armstrong’s trumpet at a rent party” by blues legend Jimmy Vivino and praised by The Wall Street Journal as proof that things are getting better. Her debut EP, "It Had to Be You," recorded straight-to-tape by Bigtone Records, was released in February of 2022 and features incomparable piano legend, Carl Sonny Leyland. Mara's debut single, the forever iconic love song, "IT HAD TO BE YOU," off of her recent Ep release with BIGTONE RECORDS features incomparable roots and blues piano legend Carl Sonny Leyland and can be heard on steady rotation on LA’s premier jazz station, KJAZZ 88.1 FM. Her second single, "DYSTOPIAN BLUES," an original tune, was featured on THE KELLY CLARKSON SHOW and performed live on CBS News in 2020. She most recently lent her writing and voice to Brooklyn hip-hop legend AZ’s track, "NEVER ENOUGH" featuring rapper Rick Ross. She is a proud faculty member of Centrum Foundation’s Voice Works program and a past instructor at their Acoustic Blues Seminar in Port Townsend, WA teaching voice masterclasses alongside some of the country's top blues and voice artists. She continues to teach in San Diego and Los Angeles, leading voice workshops and coachings in both cities. After a lifetime in New York, Mara is thrilled to call California home. The Adam D. Kamil Media Awards were developed to help UC San Diego undergraduates polish their skills in film production and to help them realize their creative potential in this field. Adam was a UC San Diego, Visual Arts Media major with a passion for the power of media to connect people. To honor the memory of their son, the Kamil family established the Adam D. Kamil Media Awards. The awards consist of a grand prize of $2,000 and two finalist prizes of $1,000 each. All submissions will be viewable in the Kamil Gallery May 16-23, and in the Kamil Gallery Online. Winners will be announced at the ceremony on May 17, and the grand prize winning project will be screened. The event will allow time to view works in the gallery, eat, and socialize. “We hope that through this award, Adam’s creative spirit will inspire others to develop their talents and to grow as sympathetic and sensitive individuals,” stated Elaine Kamil.

There is no doubt, this fiery bunch has a strong voice in both New Orleans and San Diego. NOCCA graduate and New Orleans native, lead guitarist John Saavedra founded this band in 2014. They play at several venues in both cities, estimating about 40 gigs a month; the Swinging G’s have been featured on ESPN Monday night football, NCIS, WWOZ, Offbeat Magazine, The Syncopated Times Magazine, L.A. Jazz Scene Publication, WWLTv channel 4 news, French Quarter Festival, Gretna Festival, Hey Mister Jesse! Podcast based in San Francisco, and Rochester NY WGMC Jazz. Their latest album “Hot Boudin”, was produced by Randy Crafton, a prominent engineer based in New York City, who’s worked with legends Aretha Franklin and the Mingus Big Band. Hot Boudin was nominated for best traditional jazz album of 2019 in the New Orleans most prominent music magazine, The Offbeat. They have recently expanded their travels to both the east and west coast. This new age bopping band pushes the limits of swing into their own fusion of unique sounds that vibrate with a passionate flare. John (guitar/vocals) along with Giselle (vocals/dance) provide an atmosphere that is both enticing and joyful for all who experience their music. From the museum: Mass Creativity 2024 is a collective art making and community building program for San Diego communities. For this year’s 12th annual Mass Creativity program, the Museum has partnered with collaborating artist, Chelle Barbour (she/her) to make this the most exciting year yet! The theme of our Mass Creativity programming this year is Gifts For The Future inspired by the life and legacy of Octavia E. Butler and her vision of community, and storytelling of alternative futures rooted in Science Fiction. Together we have developed a series of free community workshops in partnership with our 2024 Community partners that will take place at seven organizations throughout San Diego County. Workshops are an ode to the vibrancy of our communities and ultimately, are designed to encourage play, imagination, and collective art making. Community workshops have taken place in the months leading up to a joyful culmination on Mass Creativity Day which will be on Saturday, June 22, 2024 – and it is also the birthday of Octavia E. Butler! This event will be a grand celebration of the artworks created by San Diego communities and will include music and dance performances, food vendors, and free admission to The New Children’s Museum! About the collaborating artist: Chelle Barbour (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist recognized for her diverse Afro-Futurist and Afro-Surrealist collages. Influenced by Romare Bearden, Barbour’s characters cast a broad net in their interpretation. From vibrant chameleons, goddesses, and agent provocateurs to commanding warriors and impassive spies, Barbour’s compelling collage portraiture conveys allegory, conviction, fantasy, and femininity. Her art aesthetic and process combine fragmentations, pieces of unexpected layers of elements that challenge viewers to read inferences derived from the black Diasporic imagination and culture. Barbour is a California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellow. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions nationwide, and her work is in permanent collections of art institutions and private collections.
