Offering a message of hope that spans centuries, musical styles and faith traditions, the Village Church presents a free Spring Choral Concert on Sunday, April 13th at 4 p.m. Songs of Hope features internationally recognized organist Nathaniel Gumbs, director of chapel music at Yale University. He will be joined by the Village Community Chorale, several soloists and professional musicians. The performance includes the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein, “The Chariot Jubilee” by R. Nathaniel Dett, “Hear My Prayer” by Felix Mendelssohn, and “Song of Hope” by Florence Price. This free concert will be presented in the church sanctuary at 6225 Paseo Delicias in Rancho Santa Fe. A festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring live music performances, a new coLAB play in collaboration with our community of Casa Familiar, arts and crafts for kids, a puppet show, workshops, and more. Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Globe’s outdoor Copley Plaza in Balboa Park. This free, family-friendly event is a festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring Aztec dance performances by Danza Azteca Kuauhkoalt, live music performances by Zhiely Monraz and guitarist Ricardo Arredondo, a puppet play by Gastón Morineau and Veronica Burgess, and our new CoLAB play written by Crystal Mercado and members of our community partners at Casa Familiar, directed by our very own Valeria Vega. We will also have a puppet parade and drum workshop led by The San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Drummers Without Borders, and the talented visual artist Natalie Gonzalez presenting her original art piece titled “Ojos de Dios” (Huichol “God’s Eyes”), will also lead a workshop for audience members to create their own piece to take home. Sandra Cisneros will join Dean Nelson for an interview as part of the 2025 Writer's Symposium by the Sea, Writing That Redeems Sandra Cisneros is a Latina American short-story writer and poet regarded as a key figure in Chicano literature. Cisneros is best known for her first novel, "The House on Mango Street," and her subsequent short story collection, "Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories." Her most recent books are "Martita, I Remember You: A Story in English and Spanish" and "Mujer sin vergüenza." Cisneros is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship, the USA Literary Award, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and more. She established the Macondo Writers Workshop, which provides socially conscious workshops for writers, and she founded the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation, which awards talented writers connected to Texas. Six of San Diego’s most talented AAPI chefs (Asian Americans and Pacific Islander) will create signature baked goods for the Friendly Feast AAPI Chefs Bake Sale, taking place at Cowboy Star on Sunday, November 17. Guests can pre-order a curated box with six unique items, including an ube coconut crumb doughnut, Valrhona chocolate cannelé, “Flandan tart”, and more. Boxes are priced at $45 each. Proceeds benefit the Friendly Feast scholarship fund and Pacific Arts Movement. Bake sale boxes go on sale Thursday, November 7th via the Friendly Feast website. Based on Helen Thorpe's bestselling book, this documentary-style play follows four Latina teenage girls in Denver - two of who are documented and two who are not - through young adulthood. Their close-knit friendships begin to unravel when immigration status dictates the girls' opportunities, or lack thereof. When a political firestorm arises, each girl's future becomes increasingly complicated. Just Like Us poses difficult yet essential questions about what makes us American.
