Plaza Paseo Real invites the community to celebrate the holiday season with a series of exciting events for families and friends. Visitors can enjoy live holiday performances by the award-winning Holiday Carolers, who will bring festive harmonies to the center on Sunday, December 1 and Sunday, December 8 from Noon to 2 p.m. These professional singers, known for their backgrounds in LA Opera, theater and television, will charm guests with traditional, contemporary and jazzy carols near La Costa Coffee Roasting. The festivities continue on Sunday, December 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Plaza Paseo Real’s Holiday Spectacular. Santa Claus himself will be available for photos in the courtyard, where families can also enjoy holiday crafts, face painting, balloon art and more. Guests are encouraged to bring cameras to capture special moments with Santa. Come see the refurbished upper level at the center while celebrating the holiday season! Additionally, from December 5 through December 19, The Search for Santa’s Helpers invites visitors on a scavenger hunt to find Santa’s mischievous elves hidden throughout the center. Friday, September 13, 2024 from 4–6 PM Esteban Saltos (paper arts) PEEC for TEENS (13–18 years old) PEEC is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. The program is free and teens can register. All are invited to attend the inaugural Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts "Fellowship Forum", an afternoon of film screenings and panel discussions celebrating the diverse artistic work of fellows from across the UC San Diego community. This event showcases cinematic work produced by over a dozen graduate students, faculty, staff and recent undergraduate alumni who represent the first to receive a fellowship from the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts. The fellowship awards provide support for cinematic research and production projects with a goal of enhancing the creative and academic community. The forum will feature three, 45-minute segments of film screenings and panel discussions, concluding with a celebratory reception of light refreshments. The projects highlighted in the Fellowship Forum span an impressive range—from narratives of conflict and violence in Columbia’s mining industry, to a philosophical deepfake of Drew Barrymore, cosmic opera and so much more. November 23, from 9:30 a.m. - Noon It’s time to get into the Winter spirit by creating Glass Nightlights or Ornaments for yourself or a special someone on your gift list. Join Instructor Suzanne Balestri on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to make holiday ornaments such as snowmen, penguins, Judaica, candles, wreaths, Christmas trees, elves, etc. Keep the season’s inspiration going, and design a nightlight to add a soft seasonal glow to any room. (Nightlight mechanism will be provided.) You’ll have a wide selection of glass colors, textures and patterns to create one-of-a-kind winter treasures. No previous glass experience needed. Suzanne will help you along the way, and will send you instructional glass cutting and grinding videos in advance of the workshop so you can become familiar with several techniques before class. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Collective a few days later. A $15 (cash only) materials fee is due to the instructor at the start of the class. Adults and Teens of all levels are welcome!
