PEEC is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. The program is free and teens can register. The Crafter’s Retreat is an in-person event that gives makers of all levels the opportunity to disconnect from daily life, dive into the art of slow crafting, and handcraft beautiful projects from start to finish. Over 300 crafters will meet, mingle with, and learn from talented artists in various mediums. Workshops range from fiber art to wood carving to wax resist—there is something new for everyone. SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Diego River Artists’ Alliance (SDRAA) will exhibit work celebrating the San Diego River and its ecosystem in a exhibition titled “Ebb and Flow: Art Along the River” at the Point Loma Public Library October 3 - December 30, 2024. - 4 p.m. A portion of the sales will be donated to the San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF). SDRAA is a collective of twenty-two visual and 3D artists from around San Diego County who hike and spend time along the San Diego River from its source in mountains near Julian to the ocean. The artists create artwork about the San Diego River and its ecosystem to celebrate its history, beauty and promise and to encourage the public to connect with the variety of experiences available along the river. The work includes acrylic, photography, mixed media, glass, watercolor, oil, color pencil, fiber arts, paper, ceramic, and polymer clay. Plaza Paseo Real invites the community to celebrate the holiday season with a series of exciting events for families and friends. Visitors can enjoy live holiday performances by the award-winning Holiday Carolers, who will bring festive harmonies to the center on Sunday, December 1 and Sunday, December 8 from Noon to 2 p.m. These professional singers, known for their backgrounds in LA Opera, theater and television, will charm guests with traditional, contemporary and jazzy carols near La Costa Coffee Roasting. The festivities continue on Sunday, December 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Plaza Paseo Real’s Holiday Spectacular. Santa Claus himself will be available for photos in the courtyard, where families can also enjoy holiday crafts, face painting, balloon art and more. Guests are encouraged to bring cameras to capture special moments with Santa. Come see the refurbished upper level at the center while celebrating the holiday season! Additionally, from December 5 through December 19, The Search for Santa’s Helpers invites visitors on a scavenger hunt to find Santa’s mischievous elves hidden throughout the center. Each elf will have a QR code that participants can scan for a chance to win prizes. Monday – Wednesday, April 14 – 16, from 9 a.m. – Noon Ages 4-6 welcome! Taught by artist educator Yael Kent, your preschool age child will explore various crafts across a variety of mediums, like nature crafts in the garden, bubble making wands, nature weaving, and fossils with clay. We will explore through sensory activities, crafts and stories while developing fine motor skills. Littles learn best by doing and playing. We practice handwork and workplay. We “play” with natural objects and materials! Each project is planned so that children build skills while satisfying their need to explore. Projects are safe, non-toxic, earth friendly, and full of creativity. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station in the afternoon, and their camp begins as ours ends, we are happy to walk your child to their next camp. If you’d like your camper to stay during the lunch hour from 12-1pm, for a fun, supervised space to eat their lunch (not provided) and a craft afterward, visit Lunch Supervision.
