It is a code message sent to a timeless future: this is who we were; what we believed; what we valued.” — Linda Blair This lecture will be a meditation on Jan Vermeer, an artist celebrated in literature and movies today, but after his death, forgotten until the 1850s, when a French art critic stumbled upon a masterpiece (View of Delft) by a mysterious artist he thought might be named Meer and devoted the rest of his life to searching out more “Meers.” Today, of course, Vermeer’s crystalline cubes of light-filled space, masterful reflections, and enigmatic, contemplative women make him one of the most revered painters in art history. About Linda Blair: Linda Blair has taught art history for many years, at the La Jolla Athenaeum and UC San Diego Osher; she was a docent at The Cloisters. She holds a BA from Mills College and an MA from USD. She is an active volunteer at UC San Diego, dedicated to raising scholarship funds. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium. You may leave your work at your station for the entire workshop. Materials: The material fee includes three small wood-panel supports, 8” x 8”; R & F encaustic medium; some R & F wax colors; R & F wax colors sticks; heated palette; some brushes; heat guns; some collage materials; some paints; images; things to embed; mark-making tools; oil pastels; collage materials; transfer materials; paints; gloves; scissors. Spreckels Organ Society, a non-profit organization curating concerts and performances at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in the heart of Balboa Park, celebrates Halloween with a special Spooktacular concert featuring Phantom of the Opera and Haunted Organ Tour. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., The Haunted Pavilion opens to the public for a kid-friendly insider tour “Meet the Great Composers Decomposing,” joined by zombies from Thriller San Diego (first-come, first-served). At 6:30 p.m., the concert begins with Spooktacular organ solos, led by Spreckels Organ Artistic Director Raul Prieto Ramírez, who is also San Diego’s Civic Organist; followed by a “Phantom of the Opera” concert with Soprano Caroline Nelms and Tenor Bernardo Bermudez. The program – free and open to the public – includes state-of-the-art spooky projections on the Pavilion by SonderEyes to provide a unique Halloween visual experience that goes with the music. The San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival is a vibrant 5-day community event dedicated to celebrating and preserving American Vernacular Dance and its African roots. Organized by Claudia Gomez, owner of Tap Into Yoga & Reiki and Summer Briggs, owner of Rap A Tap Center for the Arts, the festival will be held from Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, to Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Keiller Leadership Academy. This festival will feature a diverse range of activities, including tap dance, swing dance, jazz dance, African dance, and breaking classes, along with a music theory class, historical panel discussions, a faculty concert, a student showcase, social dances, and jam sessions. Daily classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special events scheduled for the evenings. Renowned dance educators and musicians from San Diego and beyond will participate as faculty members and performers. The opening faculty concert, featuring a special African Drum and Dance company from San Diego, and a live jazz band, will kick off the festival on Saturday, November 23, at 7 p.m. Additional highlights include an open jam session at Panama 66 in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, and the student showcase on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024.
