It’s like a flute, but instead of a tube, the sound is produced in a chamber. Join us for an immersive and hands-on ceramic workshop where you’ll uncover the ancient art of crafting your very own ocarina, a whimsical and enchanting musical instrument. Throughout this comprehensive workshop, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of creating an ocarina from raw clay to a beautiful musical instrument. Under the guidance of our instructor, Israel Basurto, you’ll delve into the world of ceramics, exploring essential techniques, and shaping clay with your hands. From molding the body of the ocarina to intricately carving the finger holes and crafting the mouthpiece, you’ll acquire the skills to bring your musical vision to life. Embrace your creativity as you personalize your ocarina with a variety of decorative techniques, such as incising patterns, adding texture, and experimenting with underglazes (…all time permitting! Some folks work faster than others). By the end of the workshop, you’ll have not only crafted a one-of-a-kind ocarina but also developed a deeper appreciation for the ancient craft of ceramics. Join us in the woodshop for this 5-hour brush making workshop! We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. You will hone your carving skills by adding curves and texture to your piece. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spoke shaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. We will also discuss design principles, functional applications, the properties of wood, and brush materials such as Tampico fibers. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a unique brush to be used in the home, the shop, or as a beautiful sculpture or gift. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. Students are welcome to bring a lunch or snack for a break mid-class. ABOUT WOODWORKING FOR WOMEN & NON-BINARY The Woodworking for Women class series is designed to empower women & nonbinary individuals in a supportive and educational woodshop environment which is predominantly a male-dominated space. The Barn Redefined is excited to host another Christmas-themed festival ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ on November 2-5, 9-12 & 16-19. This event is a great place for holiday decorating ideas with one of the most anticipated features being the themed Christmas trees and this year, they have 20! Each year Santa makes an appearance and, this year, they will be collecting new toys for Anvil of Hope, a non-profit focused on helping low-income families, those facing homelessness and temporary hardship. The three weekends of events start Thursday, Nov. 2, and run through Sunday, Nov. 19. at 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.
