November 16, from 9-11:30 a.m. In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called 'scars' and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. Tues, 11/26: Ancient Games Day – Discover a world before video games, as we explore the 5,000-year-old Game of Twenty Squares, and learn to make your own ancient Egyptian Senet board. Learn to play mancala, backgammon, and chess, or try your hand at Apal Uumarr, or the game of stones. Wed, 11/27: Ice Age Extravaganza! – Enjoy our final camp day making your very own ice age rock art. Learn cordage weaving, and basket making, and hone your atlatl throwing and archery skills. Saturday, October 19, from 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The seasons are changing, and it's a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you'll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Craft Collective approximately one week after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class). This month honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose roots trace back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. R.B. Stevenson Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, “Everyday Life” which showcases two Mexican artists, including mixed media works by Laura Ortiz Vega, and new paintings by Pablo Castañeda. We cordially invite you to the opening reception on Saturday, October 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. This is a unique opportunity to meet the artists and gain insights into their creative process. Laura lives in Mexico City. Ortiz’s work blurs the boundaries between craft and fine art, evoking skills often associated with femininity, labor, and artisan traditions. It is about the physical experience of creating art through fine craftsmanship. Her technique consists of laying thread on a surface prepared with wax, pressing and folding it with a palette knife, like drawing or painting conventionally. Pablo lives in Mexicali, Mexico near the California border. Castañeda’s painting represent post-figurative painting and Mexican post-abstraction, and have been featured in international exhibitions in New York, Bangkok, El Paso, Washington D.C., San Miguel de Allende, Munich, Paris, Sacramento, Beijing, and Los Angeles, among others. His work has been selected in prestigious events such as the 10th Biennial FEMSA, the 5th International Biennial of Standards, and the 7th National Biennial of Painting and Engraving Alfredo Zalce, to name a few..
