The 27 Club presented by the Six String Society brings to life the legendary music & stories of Rock & Roll’s most infamous club. A club in which all the members share at least one thing in common; they all died tragically at the age of 27. People have wondered if they were ever all together and with the power of the audience’s imagination this occurs one evening in a mythical Greenwich Village apartment (circa 1969) the night before Woodstock. The candles burn late into the evening as these iconic figures begin to descend into the ‘Living Room.’ As the evening progresses, each icon performs their timeless songs with our signature group jam for the ages. Our All Star cast includes Whitney Shay (as Amy Winehouse), Lauren Leigh Martin (as Janis Joplin), Trevor James (as Jimi Hendrix), Tony Suraci (as Jim Morrison), Austin David (as Kurt Cobain), & Robin Henkel (as the spirit of Robert Johnson.) Thursday, January 16, 2025 7:30 p.m. The fall series concludes Thursday, January 16, with the Athenaeum debut of the Alex Kautz Quartet, featuring Kautz on drums, Chico Pinheiro on guitar, John Ellis on saxophone, and Joe Martin on bass. Renowned for his musicality, groove, and knowledge of various genres, Kautz stands out as a distinguished percussionist, educator, and composer. With an unwavering passion for jazz and world music, he has crafted a captivating and distinct musical voice. A Brazilian artist based in New York City, Kautz has been an important part of the city’s music scene for the last decade and has played and/or recorded with some of the top artists in the industry today, including Tim Ries, Magos Herrera, Nilson Matta, Chico Pinheiro, Steve Wilson, Lenny Andrade, Fabio Gouvea, Helio Alves, Victor Prieto, and Lionel Loueke. In addition to his work with various artists, Kautz has taken the lead in various projects in which he fuses the sounds of Brazilian music with jazz, most recently with his 2024 release, Where We Begin. He is joined by Chico Pinheiro, known to Athenaeum audiences from appearances with guitarists Romero Lubambo and Anthony Wilson and as the leader of his own quintet with saxophonist Bob Mintzer. Guitar giant Pat Metheny wrote, “There are many incredible guitarists out there. The Book Catapult proudly welcomes debut novelist Nora Lange for her new book, Us Fools on Tuesday, October 15 at 7pm. Nora will be in-conversation with local author Mac Crane. About the book: Joanne and Bernadette Fareown are raised on their family farm in rural Illinois, keenly affected by their parents’ volatile relationship and mounting financial debt, haunted by the cursed history of the women in their family. Largely left to their own devices, the sisters educate themselves on Greek mythology, feminism, and Virginia Woolf, realizing they must find unique ways to cope in these antagonistic conditions, questioning the American Dream as the rest of the country abandons their community in crisis. As Jo and Bernie’s imaginative solutions for escape come up short against their parents’ realities, the family leaves their farm for Chicago, where Joanne—free-spirited, reckless, and unable to tame her inner violence—rebels in increasingly desperate ways. After her worst breakdown yet, Jo goes into exile in Deadhorse, Alaska, and it is up to Bernadette to use all she’s learned from her sister to revive a sense of hope against the backdrop of a failing world.With her debut novel, Nora Lange has crafted a rambunctious, ambitious, and heart-rending portrait of two idiosyncratic sisters, determined to persevere despite the worst that capitalism and their circumstances has to throw at them. About the author: Nora Lange's writing has appeared or is forthcoming in BOMB, Hazlitt, Joyland, American Short Fiction, Denver Quarterly, HTMLGiant, LIT, The Fairy Tale Review, and elsewhere. Her project Dailyness was longlisted for the 2014 Leslie Scalapino Award for Innovative Women Performance Writers. She received her MFA from Brown University's Literary Arts Program where she was a Kaplan Fellow. An earlier iteration of her novel Us Fools was shortlisted for The Novel Prize in 2020, a prize to recognize and publish novels that explore and expand the possibilities of the form.
