  • The best writing comes from writing what you know, and based on Joel Rafael’s life experiences and over fifty years of making music, he has a deep well from which to draw. He has chronicled his life and the world around him with passionate songwriting rooted in the folk tradition. Joel began performing in showcases and small clubs around Southern California in the early 1970s. In 1981, he toured with Jesse Colin Young, and released his debut album, "Dharma Bums." Joel won Kerrville’s new folk award in 1995 and gained national airplay with the seminal Joel Rafael Band. He composed and performed all original music for the LA Theatre Works production of "The Grapes of Wrath" in 2002 and toured the southwest with Joan Baez in 2003. No influence is more obvious in his work than that of Woody Guthrie, with whom he shares five co-writes, and Joel has been a featured performer at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival for all twenty-seven years. Rupert Wates is a London-born, award-winning songwriter who signed an exclusive publishing deal with Eaton Music in the late 1990s and has been writing full-time ever since. Since relocating to the United States in 2006, he has released eleven acclaimed full-length albums, earning airplay across the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel, and Australia. His work has inspired over fifty songwriting awards and more than twenty cover recordings by other artists, including two full tribute albums recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. Performing an average of 120 shows a year across North America and Europe, Rupert continues to captivate audiences with his haunting, melodic brand of acoustic art-folk. • Join us on August 9 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Mike Hess Brewing at HessFest! This exciting event is packed with music, fun, and family-friendly activities, featuring craft beer from Mike Hess Brewing, delicious food, and local vendors. We’re proud to support two incredible charities: Oncology and Kids (OAK) and Zero8Hundred. Both organizations uplift communities facing profound challenges—whether veterans who’ve served in conflict or families battling pediatric cancer. These heroes endure PTSD, physical hardships, survivor’s guilt, and tragically high suicide rates. Supporting them fuels our mission to champion kids and vets. OAK dedicates itself to transforming the lives of children and families affected by cancer. Zero8Hundred empowers transitioning veterans by pairing them 1:1 with a military-connected counselor (veteran or military spouse) to identify their unique needs and connect them to vital resources across San Diego, Riverside, Imperial, or Orange counties. Come raise a glass to making a difference! The MHB Purpose: Bringing People Together Over Great Beer Around Great Causes Buy your tickets TODAY, then grab your shades, blanket, and lawn chairs, scoop up the kids and your friendly pooch, and head beachside to Pier Plaza Park along Seacoast, just south of the Imperial Beach Fishing Pier for this super-fun, summertime event. An awesome way to enjoy summer with your friends and family! (Please no oversized umbrellas, personal sized umbrellas that affix to your chair are acceptable. We want to make sure everyone can see.) In addition, we will have plenty of beverages (Mike Hess Brewing beers, house-made root beer and more), and the main event: a concert featuring Jimmy's Buffet, sullvn, PHT & The Honky Tonk Nights and Morgan Leigh Band!
