This annual art exhibition focuses on the discipline of fiber arts with functional and non-functional works such as sculptures, vessel forms, basketry, large-scale installations and more in textiles including paper, felt, fabrics, yarn and a variety of organic and inorganic materials. Wednesday, February 5 · 1 - 10 p.m. A day-long cypher and battle led by two notable hip hop artists, Johnny Lopez (Johnny 5) and Quentin Robinson (SpecialFX). Johnny5 was born in Oakland and is a Mexican/Latino professional Turf Dancer and the founder of TURFinc - a local Oakland/Bay Area-based company that instills positive changes in the community through dance. SpecialFX is a father of two, a Marine Corps Veteran and the founder of Movement4Movements. At CSUSM, they will share hip hop dance and culture with students, faculty, staff and the local community. The event includes guest lectures, dance workshops and a cypher featuring authentic hip hop dancers, performances, competitions and classes. Learn to wet felt a gorgeous flower! September 14, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Join this 3-hour workshop and learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of loose wool becoming felt. This textile art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. In this workshop, the instructor will guide you, step by step, through the making of a felted flower. Starting with a soft merino wool, you will be creating your own one-of-a-kind flower choosing from a wide selection of dyed wool. After using soap and water to bind the fibers, you will take home a forever flower that will embellish any space. Your flower can be used as a bookmark, tied around a curtain or the strap of a hand bag, placed in a vase or given as a sweet gift…. The possibilities are endless! No experience necessary. After nineteen years, time took its toll on the Peace Pole.The language plaques cracked and blackened. The dedication plaque at the base gradually became hidden as it sank into the earth. Change Begins With ME raised funds to restore the Peace Pole. All twelve plaques were replaced and the pole reinforced. The base has been excavated and the old dedication plaque has been removed. New cement and a new dedication plaque were installed.
