BWSD x WAHN Two community forces coming together to kick off Black History Month the right way. Imani, the owner of Black Women SD, has been intentionally creating safe spaces to celebrate Blackness in San Diego. This time, she’s collaborating with Jordan Kai, a long standing community organizer and the founder and event producer behind We Are Here Now SD, to bring that vision to the dance floor. With MYYON and DJ Kitana on the decks, this is more than a party. It’s a dance event rooted in Black arts, culture, and really good music. A space to move, connect, and celebrate who we are and where we come from. Come dance with us. Come celebrate Black history, Black creativity, and Black joy—together.

Botanica by Brisa is an immersive, over-the-top floral pop-up transforming Brisa into a transportive garden escape in the heart of Little Italy. Officially opening to the public on January 12, this experiential concept blends art installation, cocktail culture, and nightlife with fresh Latin and Asian– inspired flavors. Guests can explore a lush, visually striking environment featuring giant life-size flowers, thousands of roses suspended from the ceiling, an immersive New Year’s Resolution Flower Wall, and a mocktail-forward menu designed for elevated dining. We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we honor the rich traditions and share in the experience of Día de los Muertos on Sunday, November 2 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station located in Point Loma! Rooted in community, family, and remembrance, this event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. Through music, art, hands-on and interactive activities, we invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly gathering designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community. We’ll be decorating calavera (skull) cookies in the morning. Then, we’ll enjoy music making and festivities before a procession set to begin at 2 p.m. Join us as we walk together through the Dorothea Laub and Dance Place Buildings. We’ll enjoy the art, music making, and handmade shrines made by local community members and students! Festivities and open house will run until 5 p.m. Specific activities will be available only as long as supplies last. We hope to see you and your loved ones there! Newly merged, the Women’s Museum of California and the San Diego History Center share the stories of San Diego women.

The Día de los Muertos celebration at the Sherman Heights Community Center is a weeks-long community festivity that preserves the Day of the Dead tradition, itself a millennial practice. This celebration began in 1994, when Sr. Domingo Sandoval, a local resident approached the Center requesting a space to create an altar in honor of his loved ones during Día de los Muertos. Over the years the festivity has grown to include onsite community altars, front-yard altars throughout the neighborhood, craft workshops, online tutorials and videos, an activity guide, student tours and food tastings, a procession and fundraising event. The tradition is a joyous occasion when the memory of our ancestors and the continuity of life is celebrated. Festivities run from mid Oct- Nov. 2nd and are open to the public.
